saphire HD3870, underspec??

I had a 3850 and 3870, disregarding default clocks there was absolutely no difference between the 2 when clocked the same. DDR4 doesn't do shizzle. Not at 1680x1050 and 4x AA at least..... In crossfire they were crazy fast though

yes, the only difference i see between the two is the clocks which could have been adjusted according to manufacturer/ model...

I have a Gigabyte 3870 DDR3 card too. I have also owned a reference Sapphire 3870 DDR4. There are no perceivable performance differences, as the few hundred Mhz DDR4 gives you is taken away by its slack memory timings. £85 for a 3870 is good value!

The slacker timmings in the most recent 3870 bioses does allow for more overlocking on the memory though. Limit was 1170 before black dots would appear in 3dm06 shader tests. Now it reaches 1280 before black dots and the overall score is 100 odd points better for it so i think there is stillsome benefit having ddr4 version, but all that said I have no idea what the upper oc limits on the ddr3 version is.

The card has the PCB number of an Asus EN8800GT TOP Edition and has 512Mb RAM physically soldered to the board... however in 5 different PCs it shows up as 384Mb RAM with 96 SP... try getting that through the thick skulls at the place I got it from:

"the technician made sure the correct memory was onboard the gx card and the processor streams"

Looks like I'm gonna have to start legal proceedings as no one there seems to actually know anything about a GPU thats not written in big letters on the side of the box. (No I didn't buy it on the high street).

I'd rather not mess with the card while trying to get it replaced... but I have extracted the firmware and inspected it and its identical to the BIOS on my other 8800GTs except for the manufacturer strings.
