Ok, got my 5970 today, after ordering in the weekly sale and the fan appears to be dead. Just doesn't spin at all. I managed to boot into windows no-problem, the card works, it's just the fan isn't working, or appears to not be, so shuts the display off after a while (didn't notice the fan not working until I investigating the clicking, which luckily I had the side panel off still, so could hear it) It's attempting to as I can hear a clicking-ish sound but the fan motor just sort of jigglies the fan back and forth (sometimes manages to actually complete a rotation or 2), but it isn't spinning (I assume) like it should be.

I managed to get a GPU-Z sensor tab reading before I turned my PC off for good.

I've tried different PSU connectors too on my Corsair 950W so I don't think that's an issue (only checked it cause my GTX285 died a couple months ago, so was worried it could have done somthing to it). Do you think there is anything else I should check before I hit up the RMA?

Damn I just seem to be on a bad luck streak with my hardware lately.

D: that sucks. I dunno if the fan connector is accesible on that card but on my asus top cu 5850 I can see the wire that connects the fan to the pcb. Might wanna check wether thats properly connected if you can access it.

That sucks.

I don't know if it's advisable so ignore me if it's not, but did you try turning the fan by hand, sort of jump starting it just to get it going.

Sounds like either the fan motor is dodgy or something is rubbing/stopping it from turning.

Yeah, forgot to put that in the original post then, but yeah, I can turn it by hand, nothing seems to be obstructing the fan, and it moves freely just doesn't seem to spin at all really. Guess, I'll be RMAing it then. That's what I get for buying from a competitor (My GTX285. which just constantly had problems before it went out in a smelly burning blaze of glory), my luck went downhill from then.

Oh yeah,no the connector isn't accessible without removing the cooler I don't think, and it seems pointless to void my warranty day 1, so I'll just RMA it.

Yeah looks like an RMA. Hope you get a replacement nice and fast.

I had the same prob with my Sapphire 5970. After advise from Overclockers, i pushed on the fan (inwards) and made a loud click sound and then worked, spun and all. Try that but be gentle. If still no luck then RMA.

Good Luck

If I paid that much for a card, I would RMA, it hit some pretty high temps there, might not have broken things but I wouldn't take any chances in case of long term issues, and if it goes down again you might not notice so fast.

Got this response from the webnote and it worked a treat. So thanks to you and them for that. Finally the bad luck seems to have ended.

Kind of shoddy to have a problem like this on a £475 card.

Do these sapphire 5970s still support voltage tweaking in Afterburner then?

damn was just about to recomend that! the fans can come loose from the magentic motors, which with a bit of force an pop back into possition.
