** SAPPHIRE R290 PRO REVIEW & 1000+ IN STOCK!! **

Check whether the fan is actually spinning at all (look at it). It could be a BIOS/driver bug which doesn't allow the card to report fan speeds below 20-27rpm. It may be reporting 20/27rpm because the fan is busted.

I've seen them do this in crossfire, the fan just stops spinning, which seems dumb, just heat soaks itself.

Please do as I said in overdrive.
Set GPU temp target of 85c and max fan speed of 70% then the card won't let itself turn into a radiator and keep itself cool.

Also try moving the black dip switch on the card, it could be that a feature of quiet mode is to turn the fan off, which is plain dumb on any graphics card.

Set your fan to 40% and report back temp, then 55% and report back.

They shouuld idle at 35-55c depending on ambient and be 60-90c under load again ambient dependable.

Set your GPU temp target too 85c and fan max speed to 70% please as right now your card does not have this set.

On it!

Yeah, the fan is working. I can even hear it throttling to speed now and then.

Yeah, the fan is working. I can even hear it throttling to speed now and then.

Keep us informed, as right now it seems crazy hot, but set the fan profiles first.

Also run a heaven 3.0 bench at 1920x1080 with normal tessellation, 4x and 4x with MSI hardware monitor in background, let me know highest temp and if your card throttles and if so down to what speed. Also post me the result too. But set the fan speeds first and try the dip switch on the card.

fan settings at 40%:

fan settings at 55%:

fan settings at 70% & GPU temp target too 85c:

Ambient & cpu temperature is fine. Will do the heaven bench shortly.

What is exactly is that small switch on the gpu?

Something is very wrong there, 70% fan is loud and powerful and yet your temperature is not reducing from 20% fan hardly.

Try the black switch, but I reckon your card either has a faulty temp sensor or the thermal Tim is not there.

P.S. Hold on your fan is still at 20%, use after burner and set it too manual and 70%, wait 5 mins and see what temperature drops too. Your card might need the new driver which supposedly fixes a fan issue, it's out tomorrow I think. But set fan to manual 70% with after burner.

As he got latest driver installed?
I just Installed the driver from Amd site and fan is @ 20 and max fan @47 temp 37 core 300 I have bios on first setting

AMD releasing another driver within 24hr to fix the fan issue some configurations have, this chaps might be one of them.

Heaven Benchmark results on everything at stock speeds

Needs be heaven 3.0 sorry as I can't remember what heaven 4 should score whereas with heaven 3 I can tell if the card is running right.

Though it does seem your card got upto 89c under load, so doubtful it throttled and still remained fairly quiet as fan only got upto 49%?

Think you just need to setup a fan profile and you will be fine.

Did this:

Temps went down, as you can see. However, the card sounded non- stop like a hair dryer and not at all, healthy. Put it back to 'auto' in afterburner and temp is increasing 60+.

My bad, I did not check the Benchmark version when downloading. Yeah, from hearing, the card did not throttle and was very quiet throughout the process.

So it can be a drivers issue? Wold be pleasent indeed, if that was the case.
Anyway, thanks for the great support! Thumbs up!

Yes.
Or set a fan profile, min 40% and max 60% problem fixed and should stay quiet, also flick the switch, it will help maybe.

because something is keepng the card clocked at full 3d clocks and voltage, its not going idown nto proper idle clocks/voltage

On occasion, I've noticed that if running Windows 8, any apps running in the back ground will stop the GPU from clocking down.

Move mouse to top left corner or open task manager.

As will GPU-Z

yeah i remeber the catalyst used to have the same bug back in the 4870, and 6950 days.
Also remember the clock issue sticking when overclocking on the pre 12.11 drivers too with a 7850.

If you look at svensonbanks screenprints of idle temps, the clock rate is stuck at 939 in both afterburner and gpu-z and gpu usage is 0%,
and v-core (vddc) is 1.13v

Ive installed the new drivers and it is now running automatic at ca. 30c at idle.

Looks like this has solved it! Thanks for the support!

Wrong :(

As it seems, something must be broken. I am no overclocker and would like just to run the hardware from normal stock speeds. I have no interest in tweeking here and there and manually setting fan speeds, I'm just a normal user. If I pay that amount of money on a GPU I would surely like it to run as intended at stock speeds ;)

Any chance in fixing this? Or can I just swap the card?
