SAS Drives?

Hi guys, i've just had an SAS drive fall into my hands. It's only 73.4gb in size but its 15,000rpm. I have learned that I will need an SAS controller to actually use this but that will cost me in excess of £90 so I just wanted to know if it would be worth it.

I have googled up these specific types of drives in comparison to raptors but the results are a little unclear as to which is better.

Should I get myself an SAS controller or sell the drive??

JonJ is right I'm afraid, at the moment I'd say sell it and put the cash towards an SSD.

I'd sell it.

SAS drives are OK and are nice and fast but they do require a fancy SAS controller which aren't cheap.

I think this is why a lot of people have gone the SSD route instead.

Yup I would sell it too if it was me, paying for the controller is a bit of a waste of time.

If you're thinking of RAIDing any other HDDs (or running out of SATA slots), it may be worth considering a cheap SAS controller like the PERC 5/i (really only if RAID 5), but I wouldn't get it just for a SAS drive.

Based on the above you might not do so well on MM, throw it on ebay and hope for the best

May as well stick it on the MM though, doesn't cost you anything. Do a price check on it in that forum, there's a few people knocking around with SAS controllers/drives.

afaik the P6T Deluxe v1 had them onboard didn't it? something they removed from the v2 boards as people were going SSD instead - you might find a v1 owner who'd be wanting it.

I have a P6T WS Pro motherboard with a SSD for my boot drive and a SAS drive as my page and storage drive for things I access rarely. The setup is incredibly fast.

Not outside of the MM he doesn't.
