Evening,

I have a couple of 300gb 15k Drives that I want to use a boot drive for my server. Now I have an SAS controller (Dell Perc 6/i) but atm I'm running SATA drives off of it via a 4 way breakout cable (SAS Controller to 4 x SATA HDD Splitter Cable SFF-8484 to 4 x 7 Pin S-ATA)

Now my question is, How can I connect my two 15k SAS drives to the controller without a backplane? (The drives were previously in a dell poweredge 1950)

I have looked at getting a cage for the drives but these are quite expensive and require two sata channels for SAS?!

Is there a cheap alternative that means I can use the drives without using up more than 1 sata channel per drive?

Cheers

I'm a little hazy on this so double check but I *think* you should be able to swap your existing splitter cable for one that's a single SFF-8484 to 4 x SFF-8482 (make sure it has molex connectors for each 8482 end too). The 8482 end should be SATA compatible letting you run 2xSATA and 2xSAS.

Thanks for that, I think that looks like it would work. Cables aren't cheap though :(

Might just sell them and get myself an SSD. If you're in the know for these sort of drives could I possibly point you towards my price check thread in the MM? ;)

Thanks
