If building a new Gaming Rig would I really notice much benefit from installing 15KSAS drives, or would I get a better performance from 2 fast 7200 drives in RAID0. Hard Drives are going to in a water cooled enclosure so not worried about the heat produced or noise over 7200 drives.

Will be matching with fast CPU and GPU so don't see the point in skimping on the disks if actually going to make a difference.

Please ingnore the cost implications as I am well aware that will be more expensive. LSI make some competitively priced SAS controllers now for PCI-E so the price is coming down for the entry to SAS.

i think storagereview did some tests and actually found the raptors faster than the SAS drives for desktop users even though the specs on the SAS are obviously superior.

then again i've got a LSI SAS controller for my media server and will probably grab some SAS drives myself and have a play heh.

SAS drives are technically superior as are the controllers, HOWEVER for desktop machines they may NOT be faster

The reason is simple, server drives and controllers are firmware optimised for server applications with lots of random accessing and reliability. This is where SCSI has always excelled. I've run many benchmarks over the years on full SCSI RAID setups and found them to be slower than your average desktop drives in application performance.

For home use and desktop apps you may well find a quality SATA setup to be faster for your needs.
