So its Fathers day this Sunday, plus I want to get him a present for graduating from Uni.

Now he is away to America for 4 weeks, travelling around. Vegas to Mexico and places inbetween. Now I was going to spend about £20-30 on a bottle of whiskey for him.

Can a decent Sat Nav be got, that would work ok in the States be got for £50~?

Stick to the scotch :)

40 quid gets an excellent 18 year old Glenfiddich.

I got an RAC Satnav200 from M&M for 45 quid I think it was, don't know whether it would work state side though.

Out of the Two presents the Scotch would sit in the cupboard for years like the Irish I have in there now where as my satnav gets used All the time even when I know where I am going as it Farts when there is a Scamera about.

Theres not much chance of it sitting in the cupboard for very long! :p

He does this every year and normally relies on a pre-planned route. But thought Sat Nav would make it a bit more relaxed for the pair of them. What budget would I have to look at for a decent one?

I think a Tom Tom is around a hundred quid but there are some online deals taking it down to just under seventy quid.

Well I was thinking that, but who wants to give their Dad some software for fathers' day?

I don't know, someone who has put some thought into it and decided on something that will actually be of use, instead of just blindly sending a card every year, perhaps?

Well he's thought about it, and has come up with whiskey, which is a far nicer present that a bloody TomTom CD. Anyway this is irrelevant, as the guy asked about SatNavs, not SatNav software.

I guess you'd give your child a good hiding then if he DARED  to give you something that didn't conform to whatever the norm was? A CD? How utterly offensive.

I simply suggested it as an alternative, that's all.

There are loads decent gps units under £50, but you wont get it for fathers day now. In fact you can get a 4.3" binatone that will run igo8 quiet happily for £38.

Most of them listed here which can have igo8 hacked on to them (better than tomtom btw): http://www.simplesatnav.co.uk/forum/index.php

I recently bought a chinese 4.3" unit of ebay with igo8 installed plus all of europe maps (4gb mini sd), 500mhz processor, 128mb ram, and fm transmitter... it also has the latest sirf atlas chipset all for £57. Bargain.

EDIT I should just say that all those units will run tomtom as well as a real tomtom unit if you really want them to.
