I am looking at getting my parents a Samsung SSD but their computer still has SATA 2.

Would a SATA 3 PCI Express card be a good choice so that the PC can optimise the much faster read and writes?

If so do you guys have any recommendations for a good one?

I would just use sata 2 ports, there still will be a massive performance increase from a mechanical hard drive.

If your not happy then get a sata3 card.

I agree with Mickyflinn -it's all about seek time rather than maximum throughput/bandwidth. Most sata PCI express cards are marvel chipset and need a x4 slot to be any faster than sata2. Both my pc's are sata 2 and ssd - I couldn't use an hdd now as a boot drive.

If Intel was to start making SATA 3 PCI Express cards and they had the exact same Intel SATA 3 controller+chipset that are in motherboards and you could
use RST drivers then I would definitely be interested in one and I assume a lot of people would be as well as an upgrade for the older SATA 2 motherboards.

Unfortunately Intel don't make these cards. They should start making this kind of PCI Express cards because there would be a market for them.
