SATA 6 PCI controller

Hi there!!

I need to buy a new HDD (it will be used to boot from, and store everything), the one I was thinking of was the Caviar Black 640GB. I am fully aware that it is backwards compatible with SATA-II, but it won't run as fast.

I also know that the card/s won't run faster than 5GBPS

No currently available mechanical drive can saturate a SATA2 interface, so there is no advantage adding a controller card.

Some of the newest SSD's will benefit, but not a mechanical drive.

Agreed, there is no point buying a PCI-E add-in card for HDDs. For newer SSDs sure but not mechanical drives.

By the way, those cards you linked to are PCI-E 1x and so are limited to 4 Gbps (which incidentally isn't the same as GBps, try not to confuse the two).
