Hello chaps,

I've got a SATA hard drive installed in my machine at the moment and that is partitioned in to two, one for the Windows XP install and any apps and the other for my documents.

I've just come across an old hard drive that is IDE. I've tried slotting that in and putting the jumper to slave and it doesn't show in Windows?

What am I doing wrong and what do I need to do to get this hard drive working on my machine?

Cheers,

Hi
also check the SATA drive for any jumpers

i would install SATA as the MASTER
and put the drive as another MASTER so IDE0 at the end of the cable, and make sure the jumper is set corectly

also check the bios has sata and IDE enabled/auto

There is no such concept as master and slave in the SATA context, it's just one drive per cable.

Firstly the IDE drive has to be set as a master because (I assume) it's the only device on the cable. If it's sharing the cable with another device then one needs to be master and one slave, it doesn't matter which.

Second make sure the BIOS boot order hasn't changed around and that you're still booting from the SATA drive

Finally, boot into Windows and go into Disk Management (right click on My Computer and pick Manage). You'll need to check that the IDE drive is partitioned, formatted and has a drive letter allocated.

On my IDE I have a DVD writer (of which I have two - one on SATA one on this IDE cable) and the HDD split on the one IDE cable. Which would take preference, the HDD or the dvd writer?

OK I've set the HDD thats split with the DVD writer to master and checked the boot order and thats all OK.

When I go in to windows it still does not appear and I've checked in disk management and the drive is not listed in there either??

Any other suggestions? :(

Neither takes precedence, all the master/slave setting does is allow the two devices to be addressed independently on the cable.

OK I've set the HDD thats split with the DVD writer to master and checked the boot order and thats all OK.
Which device is set to master, the HDD or the DVD?
