Afternoon everyone,

I'm currently building a LAN machine, however the old had drive I picked up is a Seagate Barracude 7200 500gb. However it's an IDE hard drive and my motherboard only supports Sata can I get a cable that connects to my IDE hard drive and then the output being Sata?

Sorry for a pretty stupid question however I don't want to see this hard drive wasted.

You can get dangle boards for a few quid that will convert IDE to SATA.

I wouldn't though. Surely you could pick up a 500Gb SATA drive for buttons too?

Well I know however I don't want to see the drive go to waste and it's still £20-30 I could save on the build?

What's wrong with dangle boards?

ide to sata , ie ide on mb to sataport, doesn't work other way round tried it:D

And there's your problem!

Nah, you can get them the other way around.

And the real problem is when the drive starts going wonky or you get bad sectors or whatever, you don't know if its the drive or the board.

you can do it, but I'm struggling to see the merit.

So in theory I can get a dangle board, attach it to my hard drive then go, sata to sata.

Looking to keep budget as low as possible that's why.

I have one, it's horrible, you can get them for a few quid but expect shoddy soldering and it looking like it will fall apart at any moment.

I would look at getting a USB enclousre, preferably USB 3 if you have USB 3 ports available.

Those SATA to IDE adapters just aren't worth your time. Yes, they'll work, but unpredictably.
