Seeing as I clearly am not going to be able to get a secondhand diamondmax 17 IDE drive to replace the controller board of an old blown drive I was wondering if the controller board from a SATA diamondmax 17 would work?

I'm dangerously close to giving up hope:(

Data recovery might be your only option. Quite a few places will now give you online quotes and won't charge if they don't manage to recover anything. If it's just a blown controller board then it might actually cost you less than you'd think. I have doubts as to whether a SATA board would work. It's possible, but only if they haven't changed any other aspect of the drive at the same time as changing the controller chip.
