SATA drive gone really noisy

I have a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 - 160GB SATA and its making terrible noises
unless idle,defragged it and noise was horrific.I had it in 2 partions for XP and Vista so i formatted the partion had XP on and reinstalled it but still same noises
had before,ran various HDD utilities and no problems at all.So i used TeraByte
boot it and deleted both partions and MBR and wiped the full disc,i then installed
XP and now still same noises.Is drive about to die or is it something else ?

If it's making loud noises that it didn't do before it's a very big sign to a likely death. Backup anything you don't want to lose.
