SATA DVD & Raid problem

I have two identical SATA II Western Digital 250GB hard drives which I have set up as Raid. My problem is when I connect my Plextor SATA dvd writer, Windows XP freezes completely. I had to connect an IDE dvd drive to install windows xp as the Plextor locked up when Installing windows also.

Any ideas?...this is driving me nuts

It may be that the SATA controller that the DVD is connected to doesn't support optical drives, this was a problem with most of the early Silicon Image & Promise chipsets. Could also be the that the port is in RAID mode and hence doesn't know what to do with the DVD.

What kind of motherboard do you have?

I have an Asus A8N-SLI (standard) motherboard

Have you checked that the SATA port you've connected the DVD is not in RAID mode?
