Hi

I am not sure if this is the right forum section to put this question in but here goes.
I am looking for some advice on a expansion card for my home server to take full advantage of the other bays in my case, speed isn't too important I would be happy with SATA II but would prefer SATA III. I don't really have a budget but would prefer somewhere below £50.
My home servers spec are listed in my sig and I am currently using Ubuntu 12.10 as the OS

If you just want additional ports then any old PCIe SATA card will do. Avoid plain PCI ones, they'll bottleneck if you have multiple drives attached.

I realise its over your budget but I would seriously consider getting a 4 port card similar to the below:

Even if you never use the external esata port, think about how many slots you could free up on your current mobo by getting more ports /card (there are 7 port cards around too but unfortunately OCUK dont seem to stock them).

I swear by the four port card's myself - I have two of them in an Unraid server I use all the time at home, never had any issue with them at all.

Are the Startech cards any good? The problem I have is that the board I have only has one PCI slot which kinda restricts

What about a Dell Sas 6/ir they're a rebranded Lsi card from what I've found and are £52 new. You will however need two mini sas to 4 sata cables
