Sata Hard drive fix?

My mate had a 250gig Sata harddrive and his pc would crash (bluescreen) after a clicking noise. So i said he needed a new harddrive so i got him to buy a new one, and i fitted it. I have the old one i was just wondering if i should bin it r try fixing it. Has anyone got any diagnostics software for this? Its a maxtor dimondmax 9 , ive checked to see if its still under warrenty but its just ran out 3 weeks ago and i cant see any software on the maxtor site that will work

Sounds buggered. Click of death for the lose tbh.

Yeah thats what i told him , it just seems a shame to bin it when ive just got a standard ide 120gig

I have a similar Maxtor which makes a clacking sound as the heads seek data across the platters. This is completely normal and the drive is OK. The software your "friend" was looking for is MaxBlast which is available on the Maxtor site.

The so called "click of death" was associated with one of the IBM Deskstar/DeathStar drives which proved very unreliable, thus launching the fashionable "click of death" mantra amongst the semi informed.

I'd be interested to know whether your "friend's" Maxtor drive is in fact faulty and whether your instant diagnosis of your "friend's" problem was profitable to you to the extent of one Maxtor drive?

Given that your request here is for diagnostic software for your newly aquired drive I wonder whether your technical expertise is based on the "Suck it and see - preferably at someone else's expense" principle or whether you're just a lovable rascal?

I don't have any problems with sharing these pages with rascals as such. It's just that I'd be wary of taking their advice too seriously.

The advice i gave seems to be sound, i was hoping it would work in my comp but after i installed it i ran quick benchmark on it it rebooted my comp, and that has never happen since ive built this computer so it looks like it is borked, i wouldnt let him waste money on sumit(althought he was flashing his cash around) if the problem is still gonna happen, would make me look like an idiot his computer is now running faster and he hasnt had a crash yet. So it looks like the bin for this harddrive, also when i did have it connected the temprature of it was almost double to what mine is maybe thats why it broke so fast.
