Hi,

I recently bought a new hard drive; a 300GB SATA Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 SATA 150 Drive.

I partition the drive, one 130GB and the other the remaining 160GB or so, then installed XP with SP2, however because i couldnt update directx to 9c in this version of XP i did the following:

I installed XP without the SP 2 merged, and managed to install DirectX9C, so I could play the latest games (including Battlefield 2!! :) ), but, during the XP installation process, it wouldnt recognise my second partition, so I had to install it as only has one logical drive (c) with 130GB of space!!

I tried reinstalling XP but still didnt recognise it, however if i put in the Windows XP with SP2 CD, it will recognise both drives? Very strange. If I format the second partition using this disk then instead of installing, restart the computer and reboot windows normally, it will then recognise the second partition, however it will be drive (e), after the CDROM(d)

Does anyone know why this happened or any way around it or to fix it? I was thinking maybe it was the fact that its a SATA drive, and the older version of XP doesnt recognise it? but am not sure..

Sorry if the legibility of this forum is a bit unclear, only just out of bed!

Thanks, Lance.

Windows XP SP2 has DX9c installed already. The reason you lost the second partition for non SP windows is because before SP1, Windows could only recognise HDU's up to 127GB in size. There is a fix listed in the HDU sticky I believe :). Apply that to your non-SP windows and you should be able to see the partition. Also, to change drive letters, use Disk Management (Right click My Computer > Manage > Disk Management).
