I have had a read through the SATA II Faq but looking for some real life experience on this matter. Has anyone noticed a significant difference from SATA II compared to SATA I? I only ask because my board (Gigabyte 965P DS4) has SATA II on it. If there is a noticable difference then i would consider getting one. If not I will stick with my SATA I drive. If you have noticed a difference, in what sort of applications have you noticed it in? General running quicker?

There is no noticable difference between SATA1 and SATA2 as its only a potential increase in the maximum bandwidth of the data bus, which the harddrives themselves are nowhere near yet. Some people might say that they have a seen a slight speed increase with SATA2 drives, but this is more likely to be from the fact that its a newer drive, with better technology such as NCQ and increased platter density, rather than the fact that its SATA2.

Totally agree with messiah on this. SATA-II drives might have higher burst, but in fairness, who cares, it makes like a 0.5% difference. The features of the newer drives are what you look out for like perpendicular technology in the Seagate 7200.10's.

Cool - thats what i needed to know. I couldn't justify buying a new HDD unless it made a big difference to the running speed of applications.
