You can fix this by navigating to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\msahci in the Registry Editor and changing the Start value from 3 to 0 Do this in IDE mode then reboot, change to ACHI and Windows should load
you get a blue screen because windows cant find the device driver for the sata controller, as IDE and ACHI uses different drivers. And windows only installs the one that it needs.
the registry trick basically tells windows that no device driver has yet to be installed, so it'll install the correct one
I had this with my MSI board - installed Windows without changing the AHCI setting. Did the registry fix suggested above, changed the option in BIOS and it worked fine.

I actually used the microsoft fix linked above, rather then the registry hack. I'm sure it was probably the same thing but wanted to try the "official" way first.
