finally got round to building the missus her own box which she'll be using more or less for internet and office type stuff.

it's nothing too fancy, sempron 2800+, 512Mb, Gigabyte GA-K8N51GMF skt754 motherboard with onboard graphics.

had stuck in an old 20Gb hdd i had laying around. but it's running like treacle.
the hdd is clearly the culprit so i think i better put the disk back on one side (for my mame project if i ever get round to it).

i'm gonna need a new drive.
to be realistic it doesn't need to be massive, 40-80Gb will be plenty for her needs.
it also doesn't need to be warp factor fast, just reasonably quick will do.
i'm also thinking RAID is not an issue, she'll be backing up to CF card or cds.

so the question is, for this low-end type system, what are the pros and cons of SATA and PATA drives?
i've had a look and it would seem that price is no longer a differentiator.

the motherboard has IDE and SATA capabilities.

any opinions or suggestions welcome.

I'd probably still go for SATA on the basis that the cables are neater and it is a little faster however if it is an Nforce3 based system then you may still need to install SATA drivers which you can get from the Gigabyte website. If you can't be bothered with installing drivers then you won't lose much speed if anything by staying with IDE.
