There appears to be a lack of SATA I drives around. I have a SATA I drive that needs replacing "like-for-like". I take it these particular drives are backward compatable?

Thanks

Admiral

An SATA 2 drive will have a wee jumper on the back to set it into compatibility mode with SATA 1. The SATA 2 spec is backwards compatible in this regard.

EDIT: You should definitely consider Seagate's 7200.10 250 GiB disk. I have the 320 GiB version and it's fantastic; quiet, cool, and fast.

The Hitachis don't have a jumper, they come from the factory set to SATA1 with SATA2 features being enabled using the Drive Feature Tool software.

Very well. The important this for the good Admiral is that the spec is backwards compatible so he can purchase drives at will and expect them to work. :)

just had same issue and bought a 160 gb western digital, but as it was oem it did not have the jumper to use so i had to make a jumper ,so check the jumper is included when you buy it
