i have a P4C800-E MOBO.
there are two sata connections marked SATA 1 and SATA 2. i have a hdd connected to each of these.

can i connect a 3rd hdd to one of the SATA raid 1 or 2 connections? or can they only be used for raid configurations?

If This is the motherboard you have, SATA 1 & SATA 2 refer to the 2 SATA posts on the ICH5R controller, the other controller on this is provided by Promise, which are designated on the mobo as SATA_RAID1 and SATA_RAID2, it also allows you to connect 2 PATA HDDs (as it has 1 x UltraDMA 133).

You can connect your SATA HDDs to the Promise controller, and run them as individual HDDs, for this operation you would simply enable the con. in the BIOS, and having HDDs connected boot into Windows, and then simply install Promise FastTrak 378 ATA Driver V1.00.1.30, through Device Manager. This will let you run up to 4 HDDs on the Promise controller in ATA mode. If you want to set up RAID on the Promise, simply install Promise FastTrak 378 RAID Driver V1.00.1.37 instead. In saying that, the RAID controller on the ICH5R is superior to that of the Promise, and the ICH5R is easier to set up to boot from than the Promise. :)

hey, many thanks! however i can't see this - Promise FastTrak 378 ATA Driver V1.00.1.30.

is it under IDE in that link? has it maybe changed version.

another thing. in the BIOS, i enable Onboard Promise controller. in the sub menu do i set it to RAID or IDE?

still cant get this to work.

should it show as a normal drive in 'my computer' when it's working?

in the bios i have the option to boot from 3 drives. the two drives connected to the normal sata connections and, i presume, the third drive connected to the sata raid 1 connector. its given this the name SATA378 Tx2plus D0. what does this mean.
it's a samsung drive that i was previously using. should it be formatted before i try and connect it?

as above, should i be setting the bios promise controller to raid or ide to use this as a normal hdd

thanks

ok, i set the promise controller to enable, then ide. i have the drive connected by sata cable to sata raid1 connector on the mobo.
when i start up it says detecting, then finds

D0 Samsung SP1213C 111GB Ultra DMA 7

which is my harddrive.

the problem is this. before i even try to install the 378 ATA drive this appears in device manager

if i try to update the drive it won't let me after pointing to the winxp folder in the 378ATA file you sent me rpstewart.
