Do these work with all SATA drives and all motherboards? Seem to recall getting a Serrilel (sp?) adaptor thingy with some board a while ago and have a friend who needs a new hard drive and would rather buy a SATA and convert it to IDE so can upgrade more easily.

Is this a sensible option? Would it work? Or is it a waste of time?

Yep, I think I've got one of those serrrial or however you spell it adapters in an NF7-S. Not much point unless you just wanna free up some IDE room and/or use pretty sata cables! They do work fine in most cases, just don't expect any performance increase.
