I have just rebuilt my rig with a new motherboard and and processsor, whilst rebuilding it I realised that the operating system was installed on a IDE cable whilst I have 2 other drives (both SATA) that are being used for storage (non RAID).
If I transfer my operating system onto one of the SATA drives would I see a noticable increase in speed on my system over the older IDE?

One adavantage of ide dirives is that you dont usually need to load any driver when installing xp!

Getting sata drivers installed often only by a floppy disc thats not provided or you dont have a drive is really frustrating.

Unless the sata drives are much later gerneration than the ide and have higher desities and advanced sata featuires such as NCQ enabled then chances are you wont notice a speed difference.

IDE controllers and drives have just been left behind by SATA which continues to be developed and improved upon. In almost every case an SATA drive will be faster.

Hmmm new IDE drives come out regularly with the same high density platters and mechanisms as their sata cousins. The IDE interface may not be getting developed to increase theoretical bandwidth and optimised commands but the controllers are mature and still faster than the drives they are attached to.

Speed in this case will depend on the drive models fitted and the controllers on the mainboard.
