Will be building soon and need some more advice. I have about £130ish allocated for hdd's and need to know which of the following is the best option:

1x SATA2 250gb
1x WD Raptor 36gb

or

2x SATA2 160gb on Raid

I have recently read some info on the Hitachi deskstars SATA2 kicking ass agaist a single raptors performance.

Any experience/comments?

I'd personally pick the 250Gb drive.
The Raptors are fast, but arnt really needed. The 250Gb Hitachis are plenty fast enough for most situations. I have 2 of them in my system and it does most HDD related operations very quickly.

Ive just realised.
Monstermunch, are you saying that you can get 1xRaptor AND 1x250Gb drive? and that the second choice is 2x160Gb drives?
If so, get the Raptor+250Gb drive.

If you can, definitely get the 74GB over 36GB (even if it means a smaller second drive) - the 74GB version is quite an improvement in many ways over the 36GB.

Same goes for 150GB over 74GB, too.
