Bit of a random one.

I need to take an internet connection to a wind turbine.
It's around 600 mtrs from a bt(fibre) connection point.
Speed of the connection isn't an issue, but reliability is.
From a basic look at things I've ruled out some kind of line of site or GSM connection.

I could do a cable run, but how reliable is a satellite connection?
I'll obviously look for industry advice, but would kindly like some pointers on any thoughts you clever fellows could give?

Satellite is "reliable" but you inherently suffer from MASSIVE latency, if whatever you're using isn't crucial to the operating of the wind turbine(yeah that is a bit weird LOL) then Satellite will definitely be easier than running cable if you can factor in the increase in latency.

But again, this depends on what SatISP you're using, I know it's really popular in Ireland and really good too apparently, not sure of the services offered in NW England..

EDIT: Why the hell does a wind turbine need an internet connection :D:D

It's monitored as part of a service contract. A blade goes out of balance or component starts to go, they know before it causes a major problem and can repair it quickly to reduce down time.

They guarantee the turbine availability time.
Down time of an internet connection is not included in this I believe.

I'd check with whoever can offer you Satellite and check if they've got an SLA on one of their packages, as you're offering(guaranteeing..) as close to 100% availability you can't really rely on residential internet.

If the turbine turns into the wind is there a possibility the turbine may actually block the connection if the wind is blowing a certain way? What about a 3G dongle?
