Hi,

I currently have a ADSL connection of around 12Mb but im moving and the max speed is only 2.6Mb (current occupier is getting 1Mb tops) I use it for business and download anywhere between 30-50Gb per month so I am thinking about going to satellite were i can get a 18Mb/6Mb connection with 50GB cap for £59.95

As i dont use it for gaming will I really notice that much difference?

ocassion use sky/Iplay on the Xbox , will these work ok (i guess there will be a slight pause at the start)

Any advice is helpful

I'd prefer 1Mb/s ADSL. :p

You should connect a router to the BT test socket and post the line stats.

Where did you get the 2.6 figure from? If it was an online estimator, the chances are you'll get higher if you sort the internal wiring out

Your speed checker result

The estimated average broadband speed your line can handle is 1.8Mb
(between 1.0Mb and 2.6Mb)

Went to see the current occupier last night he said ''on a good day he can watch youtube without it buffering ''

Speed can be achieved (usually, but is not as reliable as other mediums) if its a good set-up and a respectable provider however it is expensive usually, if you are looking for good or average pings times, satellite is generally NOT the way to go because of the distance it has to transmit/receive and travel

I have seen ping times of around 500-700ms which we couldn't get any lower, and this generally is seen across the board with nearly all satellite set-ups, have a ganders on google to see more info as to why the ping times are that high although its pretty self explanitory as to why there will be a big delay.

Well after moving into the new house the internet was maxing out 0.2mb and after weeks of trying to improve it,it got no better. So i took the plundge and installed tooway satellite and today after running a speed test I was rocking 31031KBs d/load and 3579kbs upload.......one happy bunny and if any one interested the pings are 743 (dont online game so not bothered)

Pings are always going to be 500ms+ due to physics. It will make playing fast paced online games a complete no go and you might not even be able to connect to a lot of games due to limitations put on allowing you to join if your latency is over a certain level.

ADSL Stats if interested

Is the router connected to the BT test socket?

Also, can you set the router to ADSL1 mode? G.DMT?

85 dB on downstream line attenuation!? Crikey.. You must live on the opposite side of the country to your exchange.. :p

85dB wow. I'm surprised they firstly even set up ADSL on such a long line and secondly switched it to ADSL2+ which is not so good on longer lines.

What's it like directly in the test socket though. It's often surprising to see the difference a dodgy extension or phone can make to the attenuation.

by road (as the cable probably follows it) its 5.6 miles from exchange to house.

And im plugged into test socket
