satnav for london

Pfft, just look for mile marker stones at the side of the road.
Meh, just look up and determine your position in respect to the sun and the time of day then use an iron nail in conjunction with rubbing a baloon on your head to form a crude compass. Job done.

Yes - I do use paper maps, they haven't 'lost signal' on me yet. I also heavily rely on signs and distance markers. My fear is that because hoi polloi are switching to GPS the government will soon see signposts as a waste of money and then we'll all have to have stupid annoying voices telling us where to go!

I haven't had problems navigating London using Google Maps navigation on my Android! heck the last time I was there it took me via side roads too which cut some time away plus the benefit also being you get a decent view of surrounding roads so even if it doesn't then you can spot short-cuts and turn in to it and it will automagically navigate via that short-cut.

Plus, because it's my phone I can Glympse a friend who knows the area and he/she can see (Google Maps) me and talk to me in realtime and direct me a better route!

Simples!

If your going to be working in London then I would advise just getting the train / tube in tbh.

Driving in WILL take longer if your working normal mon / fri 8 - 4 as the traffic is pants.
Plus by the time you factor in petrol, congestion charge and general wear and tear im sure the train would be cheaper.

Nearly all sites have site box safes for putting tools in, so you don't have to lug them in and out every day; just once in on Monday, and home on Friday.

My satnav ( Google maps on Android phone) works ok in the city and bank area (contarery to the post above) but struggles in the west end (well regent st, shaftesbury ave etc)

But generally the tall buildings really screw up satellite reception.

Public transport is awful though.

I would recommend buy a motorbike. If all your tools will fit in one, it's one of the best ways of getting around in a hectic place like London albeit can be dangerous :p

For satnav we have a navman s50 i think the model is, never had any problems with it, but then again its not used often...
