What are your opinions on how games use the save function?

I've just *finally* finished eternal darkness. Now don't get me wrong, its a brilliant game (if not a little dull towards the end), but its taken me months of on-off play to finally finish it simply because at times i've done loads, died and had to start from my last save. Sometimes it added upto 20-30mins of play I had to redo, so I just turned it off and couldnt be bothered a lot of the time. Now its completely my fault since I should have saved more often, but games like this really annoy me. (Nevermind the fact that it doesn't let you save in battle).

Shenmue was quite annoying as well when you had to return to your bedroom to save all the time. Luckily you couldn't really die in that.

Save systems like that in GoW are much better. Short distance checkpoints which automatically save.

Although, I remember playing project IGI on the PC and I loved the challenge of having to complete a level in one bash.

Anyone else had any annoying save-game moments?

I prefer to save games myself, so I can play when I want til I want. 13 gig of hdd space, one save point. Pathetic. Something goes wrong with the game save, you cant roll back, made a mistake on weapon choice you cant roll back.

Stupid.

I like limited saves. Games recently are far too easy and I think it adds to the challenge.

Try R6 on realistic with one save point and tell me they have got too easy :D

I'm not saying you should be able to quicksave, if the save points are the same but you could stack a few just in case that would be fine.

One section of R6 took me 2 days on realistic purely because I didnt have smokes or grenades. With no way to go back to change weapon. Your stuck with that one save.

I liked the original AvP (well the patched/gold versions anyway) where you could save anywhere on a level but you only had a limited number of saves. Easy had 7 saves, normal had 4 and hard had 1 I think.

Completed it in coop on realistic without ever dying.

Who did you pay with? McDaniel, and hide in the corner whilst he done his thang :p lol j/k mate

As for save points, it's just expected on console games now. It's different if a game uses health packs, i think then the F5 to save is good on the PC. But as they have regening health, then you should be able to sit in a corner and wait.

I just find it a pain when i need to stop playing and i wanna go. Should get 1 free save point between checkpoints.

BS tbh.

Co-op maybe different but you would not do realistic difficulty without ever dieing.

Co-Op is a lot easier when you got a mate controlling, plus you can have 4 players!! so it wouldnt be terribly hard.

Be impossible in Single player on your own.

I like Hitman's approach - where you get x amount of saves per level depending on difficulty
