Thoughts on this? To be honest, the statistics on cheaters are absolutely crazy, and if it's anywhere near 1 in 3, that's horrific for genuine players.

I must admit, I'm still sceptical, but hopeful that a huge change is on the horizon in terms of anti-cheat!

Cheers for that. Hope Anybrain is very successful. I like how once it knows your stats, you can be banned always with any account as it recognizes how you play, though bet there will be some false positives.

Dunno how I missed this thread.

The solution to cheating (mostly) in online gaming is to support community servers and the tools (doesn't need AI) to give some idea as to whether someone is cheating or not - it isn't perfect but it mostly works. Cheating has become rampant due to the approaches used with matchmaking and lobbies, etc. distancing players from an relationship with the other players they are playing against making those who feel inclined to cheat more likely to do so, etc. etc.

Unfortunately developers/publishers don't want to do that.

Agreed - it was far better when dedicated servers were run by online communities with active admins who were actually invested in a decent play experience vs the current model of "official" servers only run by the devs who don't really care as long as they can sell more copies of the game :(

Community servers aren’t fixing cheating in competitive FPS titles with ranking systems and SBMM. Community servers aren’t a level playing field either as you’re never going to be able to standardise them.

CSGO has community servers on top of official matchmaking and there’s even the likes of Faceit where cheating is now rampant.

A lot of these titles are also free so there needs to be a proper solution for those who create new accounts, use VPNs, spoof hardware ID etc.

I’d agree for the likes of casual games like Battlefield that community servers should be brought back. This AI solution appears to be aimed at the cheating that is ruining the competitive scene.

We aren’t talking about rage hacking either as those guys aren’t lasting long.
There’s a major issue now with the amount of expensive private cheats using hardware for things like 2d radar and soft aim bots with algorithms built in that make it incredibly hard to detect any wrongdoing to the naked eye.

Back in the day the legit top players generally came up through an active community and it weeded out a lot of cheating though agreed it is a problem with the way a lot of competitive gaming works now. If you have the right grass roots level it does reduce a lot of cheating overall.

One problem with AI like approaches is often a poor handling of circumstances they've never encountered before.

Dunno what it's like nowadays, but I remember years ago where you'd still get banned from community servers because half the mods were always on a power trip.

I always found vote systems tend to be the best, at least the decision is then left to the players to decide.

I still don't actually get the reason behind a lot of cheaters. I remember from BF3/BF4 most were running aimbots where they would literally just run around headshotting players with an automatic weapon and racking up 100 kills : 0 deaths. It's like what's the actual point.

There are varying degrees of how well community run servers were run :s but generally there were decent ones out there as well as ones with mods on power trips, etc. I never had problems with finding a well admined server with a good group of regular players.

These days I don't tend to do much multiplayer gaming any more, the lobby/matchmaking system in several recent ones has gone a long way to killing my enthusiasm actually as well as the rampant cheating. Lately I've been spending more time with single player open world games or stuff like The Division 1 (where I don't bother with the PVP side).
