Saving your Pics

Is there a certain type of CD or DVD that would be best suited to saving pics to that has the best shelf life etc?
Personally would recommend a couple of external/removable hard drives; one for at home and one to keep somewhere else (work/friends/family). That with your local (home pc) copy of images gives you three copies for plenty of redundancy. Just keep updating these until you run low on space and you can replace with a bigger/newer drive. So cheap these days and avoids any worries about media degradation and the hassle of managing numerous discs, plus quicker to access/update when needed.

As above, never used CD's or DVD's as backup, even when external hard drives were £1/gb approx I spent the money, far easier! Now its nearer 20p/gb!

Just i read in a photography magazine that there is a brand that is much better than others which has a different colour side, other than silver, and it is better at keeping the files for longer!

Verbatim is a good brand, I've always used them, never had a problem.

I think you're reffering to "dye". Different manufacturers use different dyes some are better and more expensive than others.

Might be better off asking in the Optical Storage & Writing section of the forum.
