Reciprocating saws sound a good idea but in reality are not. You might think you just hold it against the wood and it goes like a hot knife through butter, even though it had a new blade I ended up abandoning it due to the noise & vibration up my arm, it left my hand tingling for ages after. My son had a go and gave up for the same reason as well

@Abyss I love that!

If you go the hand saw route, get a spray can of WD40 and spray the blade from time to time. You will be surprised how much of a difference it makes. You can also use wax, or oil etc. Also go for a saw with the largest teeth you can find and make sure it's for cross cutting and not rip.

Something like this would do the job as well, wide blade so less chance of the blade wandering or getting squiggly cuts.

@Usher you need to press the foot onto the workpiece as hard as you can and that should stop the vibration. It'll also cut much better.
