After restarting a SBS 2003 server, some clients do not automatically reconnect, some do.

This means that users do not get emails as Outlook has switched to offline mode, and are unable to browse network folders as they are working offline. All users on XP

Any ideas?

I would assume whose who do not have the issue never tried to access the network while the server was down so outlook never notices the server was down to go into offline mode...

some people may have configured OST's other may be working online all the time...

It's a restart after updates which I do at night.

tell the staff they must shut their machines down the same evening you are rebooting, only patch once a month - sorted...

when the server reboots all the session things get reset so any open connections get messed up, any connections not open will jsut be created without an issue...

user has word file open on server they get screwed since the clients session is terminated and that "session" is no longer valid

User is logged in with nothing open then when they come in to open a word do a brand new session is created so there is no issue for them

I agree with the above really, do you need to patch/reboot more than once a month? If so that would suggest a problem with the server.

Have a work patch day the Friday after Microsofts patch tuesday (second tuesday of the month) where everyone has to turn their computers off before going home for the weekend (bill it as some "green" nonsense if you have too :p).

People need to reboot their PCs for Windows Updates regularly anyway.

The server is only restarted when prompted by the updates. Just curious as to whether there was a work-around.

My users are a stubborn lot. Some keep deleting the "Your mailbox if full" email and wonder why they can't send any emails after a while.

"You need to delete or archive your emails"
"How do I do that?"
"I've shown you five times!"

Add a batch script that turns off their PC's at a certain time (after warning them to turn off their PC, so they can't moan). Like Platypus said, just say its something to do with 'Green' :p

I tend to switch off the mailbox/file quota limits, service pack Exchange and increase the max mailstore size registry key.

Outlook 2003 and onwards should automatically reconnect. I'd make sure you haven't got a 2nd DHCP server on the network and check name resolution to servername and servername.networkname.local The PCs should be using the SBS server for their DNS.

Leaving the office PCs switched on overnight is a bit weird though.

....I agree with Toughnoodle.

Make sure DHCP is running correctly and the scope is configured and that there are no machines with static IP's. The clients DNS should be configured to point to the sbs box.

How did you install SBS 2003? using the wizards is a must.

Another issue could be licensing, odd I know but if you dont have enough CALs all sorts of stranges things happen with Outlook and shares! ;)

Be careful when switching off mailbox quota's, 75GB is not a lot when running a SBS 2003 box with 30+users.
