The documentation for the backup built into SBS 2008 (presumably the same as Server 2008) quite sensibly recommends having multiple external disks so you can rotate them between onsite and offsite locations.

Does anyone know what happens if multiple external disks (probably with different last incremental backups) are available when the backup starts?

I dont know for sure but I would imagine it would use the path that has beens et. So say you plug a USB drive in and its given the E drive letter then you set your automatic backups to use E:\My Backup Files then you take that drive offsite and plug in the other one, hopefully it will be given the E:\ letter as well and make your routine backups easy.

So with that in mind if you pluged in both drives I would imagine that it would use which ever one gets the E:\ drive letter.

I dont know this for sure but thats just based on memory of how Windows Backup utility works.

Hey

I've set up a few SBS 2008 recently. The backup drives when connected dont get assisgned a drive letter, the backup software completly manages them (im guessing using some kind of device ID). It is as simple as it says on the tin.. plug two in during the wizard, then unplug one and take home - swap on weekly/daily basis and it keeps track of everything for you :)

Cheers

Well that weed on my fire! :p

I swear in the full version of server it works on drive letters, maybe Im just going insane!

I've just done a bit of testing. It looks like it treats the most recently attached device as the active target.

Late last night I was wondering if I could have two drives semi-permanently attached (one local and one iSCSI) and have it keep them both up to date.

In the full version of 2008 windows formats them without a drive letter using some new fangled technique (they dont appear in my computer).

Gaz is spot on with this one :)
