Scabies and work...

I was diagnosed with scabies on Friday and applied the treatment that night, so should no longer be infected or contagious, although I do have to repeat the treatment in a weeks time to make sure.

I've had the symptoms for 6 weeks, and I first went to the doctors on the 20th of August and was told it was nothing and to apply some steroid cream and antihistamine tablets for the itching (£10 in perscription charges for the cream and tabs.)

I then went back 2 weeks ago, was told the same thing again. The finally saw another doctor as I was at this point convinced they were misdiagnosing me, and was given the news I was dreading. (extra £21.60 in prescription charges)

I let my family know, and then proceeded to let work know as I work in a Post Office and shop in contact with the public. I felt this was my duty. Anyway, the general manager said it was no problem and seeing as I'd had the initial treatment I was fine to head back into work this morning after the weekend.

Then this morning I get sent home and I'm not allowed back until I have a note from the doctor confirming I am good to go to work and not cantagious, and in the meantime EVERYONE at work has been told to go to their doctor to get the treatment also. FFS! I'm the least likely out of all of them there right now to have it considering I've had the first lot of treatment.

I need the money and now get the feeling they'll have replaced all my shifts for the rest of the week with someone else, and with me being on a **** contract with hardly any hours on it I feel they've used this as an excuse to take me off all the extra ones I've been doing. I don't know why I've felt the need to share this with you all, just needed to get it off my chest. I feel crap about it all, even though none of it is my fault :(

It's a hazzard of working with the public I'm affraid.

Had a girlfriend who worked in an old peoples home a few years ago and had loads of treatments just in case she'd picked it up.

Was free through her work so not too bad, the old treatments were really smelly though and got through loads of bed linen, changed daily.

Don't you get SSP?

I'm probably going to find this out later. I wouldn't be surprised if there's some clause in my contract which means I can't get it, it's got everything else covered

The annoying thing is this has all come about just because one member of staff has freaked out over it, while all the others were understanding and accepting that I am pretty much zero risk now I've had the treatment, whereas for the previous 6 weeks I've been working without knowing I had it I was. Makes no sense at all.

Yep, which = sod all, so I'm better off hoping the doctor can clear me for all work and no hazard to my co-workers and the public. It just seems bizarre how they can come to the conclusion that I'm the only one not fit to work when I'm the ONLY one who has had the treatment, for all I know they could all be infested.

I had scabies during my first term of uni, took me AGES to get rid of the buggers. Strange thing was though, that my room was the meeting place for tv/movies/drinking etc and nobody else got them. So from that I concluded that they are a nightmare to get rid of fully but pretty hard to catch if you are under going treatment. From what I know its the egg cases that the creams don't kill, which is why you need to re-apply a week later when they've all hatched to kill the new borns, so you're not contagious during this time.

Yea that was my understanding. In the meantime all my towels, bed covers, pillow cases and most of my clothes have been put on a boil wash since I've been treated.

Also, no idea how I've caught it, in the past 4 months I've not slept with anyone, shared my bed with anyone, worn anyone elses clothes... only thing I can think of is catching it a gig or from someone in work, either a cutomer or other member of staff :/

I had this for a few weeks after the doctor misdiagnosed me with Eczema. Was told to apply the cream day and night for three days and wash my bed clothes during that period. I was going to work as normal during that time and it was gone within 5 days.

Well I went back to my doctors and was given a fit to work note, free of charge thankfully. So managed to sort it all out and good to go back in tomorrow. Despite people kicking up a fuss.

It was a good job I let them know I had it when I was diagnosed with it though, as I found out the owner of the shop was prepared to give me a disciplinary for it, I was like WTF?!

I know this thread has touched on medical grounds, but I haven't asked for any advice, but if the mods feel that it should be closed I'm happy with that now that I've had a vent :)

Also good to know I'm not the only one who has had it :p
