Just wondering really, I hate getting emails from my building society but non the less they send me them now and again, just recently had one and it looks a bit iffy.

Has anyone else had one similar (from Nationwide). Cheers

Subject: Just to make sure...

Just To Make Sure

Your postcode is XXX XXX

Dear XXXXXXXX,

Some time ago, you may remember, you were kind enough to let us have
your email address.

Now we have it we'd like to be able to send you email, every now and then, with
news of our latest products and services and member information. After all, email
is an easy way to stay in touch.

However, we also recognise that you need to know any email you receive from us
is genuine. So, to help you make sure I would like to remind you that we guarantee
two things.

First, we guarantee that any email we send you will include your postcode - both
at the top, and at the bottom.

Second, we guarantee that any email we send you will not request any confidential
details or security information such as account details or PINs. We will NEVER do
this in an email. Nor will we direct you to a website requesting you to enter your
personal security details.

As I said, email is a useful way to keep in touch with you. But don't worry - we
won't overdo it. We'll only send you email when we've got something genuinely
helpful to say.

And here's another promise: because your privacy is important to us, we will never
share your email address with anyone else.

Having your email address will help us provide you with an even better service.
If you have changed your email address since we last contacted you, or would like
us to send you email using a different email address, please click here xxxxxx
so we can update our records.

However, if you'd prefer us not to communicate to you by email, just click here xxxxxx to let us know.

Yours sincerely,

Mike Evemy
Marketing Controller
Nationwide Building Society

They have my postcode correct but anyone can get postcodes.

And here's another promise: because your privacy is important to us, we will never
share your email address with anyone else.

Thanks for letting me know, even if it is in the DPA

Phone Nationwide and ask them.

If necessary ask for Mike Evemy.

If you have to ask, it's a scam.

Does the "click here to unsubscribe" type link take you to Nationwide? That is surely the only way to find out if it is real.

Sounds like they are just baiting you, Expect an email in there with your postcode at the top and bottom with a login link somewhere

Gilly's hit the mark again, was just about to say the same thing although probably better and with a little more flair. :p

Aye thats what I thought, I nearly clicked the unsubscribe button but I thought it was too fishy to click anything, removed the links from the op.

er if you had changed your email address you wouldnt be recieving the email.

the whole email seems stupid and pointless.

its like phoning someone and asking if they have changed there number to update the records.

you wouldnt reach that person if they had changed the number

That's a pretty standard email for Nationwide.

But that's not to say that someone else couldn't spam an almost identical looking email, where the links then link to dodgy sites, asking for personal information and details etc.

But it is most likely genuine - Nationwide do send out emails in that format.

Aye, it was the format of the letter which striked me as being odd, it's too formal. ah well, I'll forward them the e-mail and ask if it's genuine. They should only be contacting me by post.

Unless you need to update your email address then i'd just delete it regardless of it being real or not.

If you do have to update your details contact the bank direct their contact information will be on their website, don't reply to emails.

aye I'm not replying to the initial e-mail, I'll get a customer services address from the site.

Cheers for the info, first e-mail I've had from them in about 3 years of being with them.

TBH tho if you have to ask its almost deffinatly a scam.

except in this case it's probably not :p

It really depends where the links go to - my thoughts are that it is genuine...but I'd follow the links with caution. If the links ask for any personal details or information, then it is a scam.

But as far as I can tell, the email is just thanking the user for allowing them to email them, and informaing them of the types of emails they are likely to receive in future.

The email is not asking the recipient to do anything, unless they wish to opt out, or update their contact email. Unless you wish to do either of these things, then you can ignore the email anyway, scam or no scam. If you would want to 'opt out' then just follow the link with caution.
