Advertised for someone to come and do some work in my back garden. He came day 1 and did a quarter of the job. That same night he came to see if I was happy withnhisnwork, I said yes and paid in full so that he could finish the job day 2 and be on his way not having to come back for payment as I'm at work when he's in the garden.

Well its been 2 weeks and he's ignored my calls and emails. Here's a rundown of what I sent to ratedpeople.com complaints:

He came on Tuesday 19th May to look at the work and quoted me £150 for the following

1. Maw the lawn (which he’s done)

2. Jet wash the weeds from in between the cracks (which he has also done)

3. Cement the cracks so weeds don’t come back

4. Remove all rubbish such has plastic and old pots

5. Remove all the weed and loose grass from the edges of the garden.

I accepted.

He completed 1 and 2 on Wednesday 21st May. I came back from work and asked me if I was happy with what he’d done so far. I said yes and paid him so that he didn’t have to visit me again once he completed the rest of the work, I did this to make it easier for him. He said he’d complete the work the next day (Thursday 22nd May).

The next day I came home and wasn’t complete. I rang him and he said he was busy but left 3 bags of sand behind my bins and will come Friday to finish. He never came on Friday and didn’t pickup my calls.

The next week I rang on Tuesday and he said he’d have it done before the end of the week. To be honest this wasn’t acceptable as I’d paid in full and expected the work to be done already. He never came all week.

This week he’s been ignoring my calls. Yesterday I rang from my work phone and he picked up. Told him he hasn’t done the work he said he’s been really busy and will do it tomorrow (i.e. Today). Funny how he picked up the phone when he didn’t recognise the number. This leads me to believe he’s taken my money and has no intention of coming back to complete the work.

His contact details are below, I’ve tried emailing him and got no reply. I am going to go to his address today to confront him, this has gone on long enough

I found his address and went round with a letter saying he needs to complete the work ormgive me some of my money back.

Is there anything else I can do?

I'll ring trading standards tomorrow. From experience has anyone here had a similar problem and got their money back or got the job complete in the end?

has he given you a receipt at all or was it just cash in hand?

Might as well phone up HMRC too while you're at it along with Trading standards and if he takes much longer fill out a claim on moneyclaim.gov

then of course, as mentioned above, you also know what to do with his letterbox....

Rule 1 : Don't fully pay until the job is done to your satisfaction.
Rule 2 : see Rule 1

Breaking this rule = they go to the pub and spend the money, never comming back. :p

Cash in hand and a handshake. He has over 400 5 star reviews hence I chose him. In future I'm never gonna pay in full even if they've done some of the work.

Never pay anything until ALL work is completed. I don't pay my staff on wednesday for thurs and Friday.

And Tradesmen are the worst.

It's not always their fault but very few turn up and leave on time...Or even on the correct day

I will never understand how people can "poo through his letterbox"

I mean unless the door is lying flat on the ground how can you poo through it? You're going to have to poo on something else before you can lob it sideways through a letterbox.
