Does anyone here ever get scared when putting a new PC together?

I got my new components at home waiting to be put together but i always worry i forgot to back something up or i will not connect something properly or manage to break something.

Who else gets the build jitters? :D

I'm always worried about what will go wrong. Because something always does, and it's not necessarily my fault either.

I sometimes get worried about snapping something off, or crushing my cpu or summin, i guess i just take my time and things normally work out fine.

Built my last 3pcs, and other than some software issues and using crap old hard drives, physically they have all booted up and ran perfect. With good temps etc

On my very first home build (3400+, 6800U, 1Gb when this was all top of the range) I was at home struggling with a threaded screw on the motherboard or something equally daft. There was a knock on the door and it was my mate asking if I wanted to pop out for a "quick pint".

Several hours and 12 pints later, I approached the matter with great courage and built the whole system in what seemed like record time.

get a bit hot and stressed putting the things together usually. next time i'm gonna buy a bigger case hehe, i always find there is always a few connectors that are fiddly or hard to reach and drive me nuts.

i thought the old socket A stuff and previous stuff was awkward removing the heatsinks, forcing down on the connector and then flip it out. occasionally the screwdriver head would slip and hit the mobo :/ time to cross your fingers :D

i get a bit sweaty when building a new PC/switching case, usually peaks when im trying to unscrew the motherboard from old stand-offs, and when im about to press 'on'

I find the bad bit for me is a few moments after I've hit the "buy" button, and start thinking "oh gods, why did I just spend all that money, did i get the right things, do i actually need them?"

That and the howl that comes from the speaker when I turn my rig on after a poke around, only to realise yet again I've forgotten to plug the PCI-e power connector back in...

But nothing beats the feeling satisfaction of something you've put together actually working. Well, nothing computer related anyway... ;)

PK!

never been scared, but always nervous. Through experience i check and double check all parts, and connections are in place. Though nothing would have prepared me for when a Hiper PSU went bang on first power up!!

im always nervous about turning it on ever since an incident at college where i put a 3 pin power cable on the graphics card jumper  it went bang and the cable melted :(

it was the first time i ever done anything inside a pc, and it was looked at by the teacher to see if it was ok before i turned it on

i dont know why im still nervous now though, ive messsed about inside loads and nothing else has gone wrong

having practiced with older rigs pulling them apart etc, I wasn't too concerned with my first build until it came to the cpu, I'd never played with that part before and was concerned with the pins bending etc. Just took my time and all was fine. Now I'm a little more relaxed about it but I still take the cpu bit slower and sometimes think the flex in the motherboard is a bit much when inserting things like graphics cards/pci cards etc.

Yeah I bent the pins on a processor a few years back and sat with tweezers and straightened them all lol... took forever but the processor worked fine :)

I always panic when pulling the lever on the cpu slot down on any new system, even more so on the LGA 775's with the pins on the board, since I can hear it start crunching when it's not even half way down :P

lol, i hate the CPU, twice now my 3500+ has been ripped right out the bracket because of the stock thermal pad, and my uncles lack of ability to apply minimal amounts, luckily no pins bent/broke either time

I was a bit scared putting my first water cooling system togther, Ive been building my own systems for 10 years but having a £200+ graphics card with a big piece of metal attached waving around on a pipe wasnt nice. It was possibly my slowest build, about 4 hours I think. Strangly the water wasnt a problem till I took it apart.

looking forward to that in the coming months as well   :(

Yup, I still get a bit nervous when putting my system together, but if you get stuck just take a few minutes and think about what you're doing. I'm probably over cautious, components aren't as delicate as you may think though (obviously they won't stand up to being abused though).

Just take your time, and if you have any problems someone here will be more than happy to help.

I have vague memories of being a little nervous when I built my first PC (~9-10 years ago now) but it hasn't bothered me in years, there is always that slight moment of doubt at the first time I press the power button but since I very rarely upgrade it doesn't matter much. I prefer to just build a whole new PC so I always have the previous one(s) to use anyway. :)

Most tense times:

  • Picking up CPU
  • Dropping CPU into socket (don't breathe!)
  • Clamping CPU in
  • Attaching HSF, seeing and hearing mobo bend
  • Pressing power button for the first time
