Scary Films?

I've watched many of the current crop and generally find they go too over the top (Hostel, Saw etc) and become silly rather than scary.

The last film that I watched that gave me the creeps was 'Shrooms'.

Cheers,

Nigel

Can't remember a specific film that was scary as such.
However the scene in 'The Cell' where it's an empty desert, and Catherine is riding across it on a horse... That freaked me out, a lot.

I'm weird huh?

I can't remember the last time a film made me jump - apart from maybe Kazaam...

Have spread my net quite far and wide... Korean and Japanese films are nice and original... with some quite gory bits...
and I am getting thoroughly sick of all of the American remakes....

I just saw Mirrors... was enjoyable and it made my lady friends jump, but I couldn't see anything to get flustered over :(

I watch all types of Horror films inc foreign language ones and have never been scared. Maybe jumped slightly as i have the volume quite high when watching films but never scared.

Then I feel sorry for you. You must be totally desensitised. Either that or you're watching crappy films by the Pang Brothers or Hideo Nakata's awful follows-ups to Ringu.

The guys that aren't jumping during theses films., are you doing what I used to do, which is sit through the whole film thinking "there's a jumpy bit coming, be prepared." Then when it comes, you have expected it and it doesn't have any impact.

Having that attitude ruined a lot of alright films for me, but since watching a few foreign horrors and having to read the subtitles my mind was taken off the "jumps" and I started to enjoy them again. Now I just switch off and don't expect anything, makes watching them much more enjoyable. Having said that, some films are just do damn predictable.

Yes, I think a lot of it is to do with what you want and expect. Sometimes it's not outright fear, but a creeping sense of uncertainty and dread. Three films that have given me this in spades are The Orphanage, Shutter and Ils.

The problem is similar to that experienced by people who said that the Blair Witch Project was rubbish. It wasn't rubbish at all. People didn't like it because they were expecting a seriously frightening film, which it isn't. It builds psychologically until the team's uncertainty terms into paranoia and blind panic - but it's not several thrills a minute. It's a very good film for what it is, but like with the negative reactions to [REC], it's always a good idea to judge a film on your own grounds than expecting "the most frightening film ever" because you'll always be disappointed. Try not to walk into the cinema expecting anything.

Yeah i think i am desensitised tbh. No need to feel sorry lol, i still really enjoy watching horrors, its still my favorite genre, in films and games (see sig).

I do wish i was a kid again some times. I remember being scared by I.T the clown when i was a kid :D.

I watched "Altered" last night. Not really a jumpy film but very nervy and unsettling. I really liked it. Like a slightly more graphic Outer Limits or Twilight Zone episode.

Oh, and Gilly, loved the "too many S's" comment. Subtle and had be giggling in the office. :)
