doom3 for me
problem for me (well say problem it actually increased the game atmosphere a lot)
I only played at night with all the lights off, because it is a dark game.
and I played with full ear muff style headphones on (obviously late at night you want to be quite)
I honestly couldnt play for more than an hour at a time
one night in particular, my other half went to the chinese takeaway, and i didnt hear her come back
I was just at a bit, in a pitch plack room, with a groaning zombie close by, that I couldnt see, but could hear getting closer
The &^$%^$ sneaked up behind me and dropped her hand onto my shoulder to let me know she was back with food.
My head almost hit the ceiling and I nearly had to get changed.
A bit later on though doom3 started to lose its scary aspect, the beginning sections are very atmospheric.
Take my advice, resist all temptations to download the "tape" mod that lets you attach the torch to the gun barrel, I tried that very briefly and it spoiled the game.
Having a choice of using the torch to look around or a gun in your hand to shoot the unseen zombies, added a really nice touch for me.
If you think getting scared by a game is sad, then im sorry mate but you havent got enough imagination, games are there for fun and to have fun you have to emerse in some of them, otherwise you just end up with, "how can i complete this £40 game in 17 minutes and 3 seconds mentality"
To enjoy a game properly, wack it onto the highest difficulty straight away, dont download any mods (except for bug fixes) untill you have completed it at least once) and shut out the real world for a little while
