after seeing this thread i thought i would make this to find out what scary FSP games are out there. OK i admit Doom 3 scared the pants off me at parts but i love that heart racing adrenaline rush you get sitting there in the dark waiting for something to jump out and rip your head of, discuss

^^^ what he said. SSII is like Deus ex with flesh eating zombies - so much involvement, atmosphere and tension. Nothing's really come close to beating SSII

Yup, SS2 was great, but for more modern games, I would have to say Condemned - could be quite unnerving.

Scort.

deus ex is amazing but i cant seem to get it to work properly now. when i pick up items they change to other things and they arent in my inventory. ie if i was to pick up bullets they would appear as a drink or something in the inventory.

Condemned was fun, nothing like cracking skulls with lead pipes :p

It sure was, until I had to reformat and lost my save games :( Think this is another game that saves them into %userprofile% rather than the game's install dir (didn't know that at the time doh!).

I was on one of the later missions I think, some farm house, with zombie things in the basement - freaks.

Scort.

I think you have to be pretty soft to be scared by a game ..

not to say there havent been a few instancies where the odd loud bang in a game has made me jumpy ;)

doom3 for me

problem for me (well say problem it actually increased the game atmosphere a lot)

I only played at night with all the lights off, because it is a dark game.

and I played with full ear muff style headphones on (obviously late at night you want to be quite)

I honestly couldnt play for more than an hour at a time

one night in particular, my other half went to the chinese takeaway, and i didnt hear her come back

I was just at a bit, in a pitch plack room, with a groaning zombie close by, that I couldnt see, but could hear getting closer

The &^$%^$ sneaked up behind me and dropped her hand onto my shoulder to let me know she was back with food.

My head almost hit the ceiling and I nearly had to get changed.

A bit later on though doom3 started to lose its scary aspect, the beginning sections are very atmospheric.

Take my advice, resist all temptations to download the "tape" mod that lets you attach the torch to the gun barrel, I tried that very briefly and it spoiled the game.

Having a choice of using the torch to look around or a gun in your hand to shoot the unseen zombies, added a really nice touch for me.

If you think getting scared by a game is sad, then im sorry mate but you havent got enough imagination, games are there for fun and to have fun you have to emerse in some of them, otherwise you just end up with, "how can i complete this £40 game in 17 minutes and 3 seconds mentality"

To enjoy a game properly, wack it onto the highest difficulty straight away, dont download any mods (except for bug fixes) untill you have completed it at least once) and shut out the real world for a little while

Thief 3 has a level called The Cradle that is probably the best crafted spooky level of a game. Play it in the dark with the sound up and its very very chilling.

AVP2 for the "make you jump" factor. System shock for the "**** your pants" factor.

Condemned also did a good job of making you do constant 360's to make sure nothings around you :p

What he said, but with knobs on. Scariest game moment ever (IMO)

(the rest of the game wasn't scary at all)

Although not out yet (it's due soon on PC and 360), BioShock should provide a whole lot of scares. It's the spiritual successor to the System Shock series.

Check out some videos here.

Some already mentioned -

Undying
AvP 1 and 2

also

The Suffering

there's also a mod for half life but can't remember the name - had zombies I think :(
