Scary Stuff...

No conclusions yet, I emailed the lead on the case last night (you reminded me) and he came back to me first thing, which is pretty good. Still on-going in simple terms with no conclusions but making solid progress it seems from what he outlined. Won't got into all of the details provided but various activitives taking place presently and bib are working it well it seems. Will update when I know more.

To be fair they wont tell you much sneaky beaky stuff! You re lucky to get a generic email back :) Will be a pain to find these people, using hitec crime units take foooorever to get a result.

Pretty scary and more than believable, very easy to do. I could do this with my mobile and google maps.

I HAVE done this with my mobile and google maps. GSM GPS tracking device is nothing more than a GPS chip, some rudimentary software to log the coordinates and the updating portion handled by a GSM SIM with simple mobile software that chucks the data on-line over EDGE/3G/Your connection of choice.

It does not need a constant data stream (upload cache) and you don't need the accuracy turn-by-turn GPS navigation needs, couple of plots here and there and common stop/start locations is more than enough to get to a home/work destination.

Mine works from the glovebox.

sorry to bump an old thread

but has anybody read the 4 door saloon feature in this months evo ?

interesting reading that the RS4 is now top of the robbers hit list now that the police all have 300bhp imprezas and evos.

So they're choosing 400bhp RS4s in order to have a slight edge on them. In the same way that the impreza was the getaway car of the 90s, the RS4 is becomming the getaway car of this decade apparently.

no wonder they were willing to go to such lengths to find where you parked it.

The ones on eBay look much smaller than that, and one of the suggested uses is to put them on pet's collars. They have probably shrunk a lot in the past few years as it's still a relatively new device.

They all seem to be Sirf III devices which would make a nice small package and GSM tech is pretty small these days, just look at USB dongles.

No joke, given how much I have just spent on my new rig I think I might fit one of these to my PC case above the optical. lol

Bit risky, that.

"What you in for?"
"Robbery"
"How'd you get pinched?"
"Valve deposits"

All I can say is Jesus, brings the world we live in, into stark focus really doesn't it :(

I'm gonna ask my uncle about this sort of thing when I next speak to him, he used to be in West Midlands Police, although he's with the Calgary Police force now since he moved to Canada almost a year ago.

I remember him telling me a few years back that a lot of S3's were getting nicked and nice A3's ...when I was looking at them myself actually, although as it turned out I didn't care for the drive much.

Hence the police are going to new heights...

Well for those interested I can update you today on the conclusion of the case relating to this incident having just received a letter from the officer running the case who has been excellent at keeping me up to date on things.

Three men were sentenced this month for 4 years, 3 years and 18 months, with another failing to show and now with a warrant for his arrest. They were sentenced for the theft or attempted theft for over 300k's worth of motors of which mine was one. They had visited my property twice but were unable to see my car or see me thankfully (as I had my keyboard and would have course done some fungcoo on their asses of course) and hopefully this is the end of things as far as this incident is concerned.

I can probably share some pictures of the car/device now, which I might upload later.

2 magnets on the back, I have a picture but behind it is the evidence bag with names, details etc so can't post that really.
