If you think VW scene tax is absurd, check the prices of these parts:

MK2 Cortina Interior Mirror

MK2 Cortina front wing

Yes folks, £400 for a mirror. Welcome to the world of classic Fords.

A few months ago I saw a MK2 Lotus Cortina steering wheel go for over £500, an original wind up jack will fetch upwards of £100 so you can try and dismiss these prices as overly optimistic but people actually pay this sort of money for the parts

Rare. Rare. Rare. Anything rare fetches money.

Little piece of original brand new history there

Rare JDM MX5 parts can get like that. £300 for dash clusters, mirrors etc. People pay it too.

Thats not scene tax though its just supply and demand, those parts are not made any more hence the demand outstrips the supply.

Scene tax doesn't really exist at all, it is simply what people call supply and demand when they don't happen to agree with why the demand for something is so high in the first place.

There's not a massive demand for brand new in box parts like that, there's just a select few taking the mickey out of people doing concourse builds - you can pick these out of a box of parts at an autojumble for a tenner and you can buy the mirror glass and rubber new if needs be.

There doesn't need to be a massive demand when the part in question is rare. as long as someone is willing to pay it then that will determine the price.

No I totally agree, I can't really think of any other classic make with this sort of problem though. Values on classic Fords have absolutely shot up in the last 5 years as well, whereas things like MGBs have remained pretty static.

Have you also noticed that you don't see many classic Fords around any more as well? They have all but disappeared off our roads. I used to quite regularly see Anglias, Escorts, 100Es and Cortinas parked up or driving around. I can't remember the last time I saw one other than mine.

I wouldn't call it scene tax with Fords. Panels and NOS parts have always been expensive on the non-Escort models. Scene tax is more what you get on VWs, boosted by rusty roof-racks and tat.

Saw a cortina on track on sunday at blyton - it looked absolutely mint from the outside, I can only assume they did a lot of body work to it and the a full respray. It was running the 2 litre zetec (ST170) engine and went surprisingly well, quite drifty, too.

Thats not a great deal at all, I could be wrong but I'm sure I saw a high level brake light for a Mk2 Golf for £800 sometime last year. That is taking this proverbial.
