For some things yes, though it's not all about power and more to do with sound quality.
An external DAC and amp such as the Modi 2 and Magni 2 would be a definite improvement for music but would mean you would lose the surround and positional audio features of the sound card as the sound you would get would be pure, clean stereo.

Unless you get the optical and run it from the card. = best of both worlds.
Yes, that will work and was one of the main reasons they brought out the optical Modi.
Personally, if I was in the market for an optical DAC I would go for the Modi 2 Uber rather than the Optical Modi because it's newer, it's improved and it's shinier

If the lack of surround sound starts to get to me I'll look at getting the Uber at some point. It was odd last night in Far Cry 3, the sound would just shift from the left headphone to the right instead of sounding gradual. I took it for granted before.

Have you tried Razer's surround software? It could be a cheaper alternative.

I've done a bit of thinking 'outside the box' with regards to the space problem caused by the splitter. I could just run the output from the Modi out the back and though the hole in my desk, do the split under my desk and feed back to the Magni from the hole. Such a pain having a fitted desk!
