School Detentions

Looking forward to hearing the feedback from the parents night OP :)

Well after parents evening his form tutor said that seems a little harsh and he will speak to the science teacher to see if they can remove it from the record.

He also said his form pupils are allowed to drop their bags off in his classroom if they don't have time to go to their locker. Seems a nice teacher and he's happy with how he's doing and there's no problems so he's not some wild hellraiser at school.

I had an issue and a complaint to deal with today about detentions.

I teach Year 5 in an expensive international school in Cairo. I was off sick yesterday and to deal with an incident involving a member of my class and the supply teacher.

The supply teacher told him to put his letter into his bag straight away (the child is very forgetful and if he had read it first then he would forget to take it home. The child refused to follow the instruction which according to our policy is. Red detention so he loses 20 minutes of his 2nd break. He then continued to give her total attitude and at this point she verbally put him in his place in front of the class.

When I arrived this morning, I found a note explaining how rude he had been and that he was given a detention and it had been served that day. I rang his mother to inform her of the incident directly as he has a habit of twisting events.

She asked me why he, being ten years old, was not treated with the respect he deserved almost being a man. I told her very calmly that he needs to earn respect, particularly with unfamiliar teachers. She told me this was not good enough and she demands her child is treated with respect at all times. She stated that he was punished twice; a detention and a verbal dress down in front of his peers (his least favourite thing- in previous years this has kicked his attitude off).

At which point I reminded her that both offences were, according to school policy, red detention offences. The first led to the detention. The second was for the lack of respect he showed to a member of staff which we take quite seriously now. I reminded her that he was treated with the correct level of respect and with more respect than he had displayed public ally.

If he or she wants a higher level of respect from that particular teacher then she can't just demand it, he has to earn it. Or she needs to help teach him that with me.

It really annoys me with how parents can be sometimes. I understand fighting for your child but this is one sly child, who frankly got as good as he deserved this time. She kept on interrupting me throughout the conversation and I had to ask her to let me speak before threatening to hang up. Eventually I hung up.

Only ever had detention once, after 3 "D-marks" for playing conkers in the classroom.

Did the crime, did the time - it wasn't that bad had to write a short essay on the pitfalls of... playing conkers in the classroom.

The biggest challenge was inventing a story to tell my parents why I was 45 mins later getting home.

Back in my day dodging the cane or strap was more vital, either through good luck or (generally) being a goodie two shoes I never did suffer that particular fate!
