They are a thing in America.

I was pretty shocked when I read about it but also not surprised. Apparently 2/3 schools in America have these.

It is a good job that guns are not the problem.

I can see they are valuable and may save lives but it is a sorry world they live in over there. Another reason I am glad to be born here.

They would see us as equally mental to be left defenseless in our own home against a physically stronger attacker. School shootings are incredibly rare events, it's not like they happen every other week.

My wife's primary school and my kids school both run these drills. It's been a thing since Dunblane. Or are people forgetting we have an issue with gun crime as well (admittedly not on the same scale)?

They also often have metal detectors for knives, etc. as well - its a different world in some respects.

So do some of schools in London.

My son and daughters high school runs a lock down drill each term it is horrible thought but better to have a plan of action just incase it is ever needed.

This is not why they have guns.

They have guns so they have the military capability to overthrow the government if they needed to.

There was talk of putting them in some schools in Aberdeen after a fatal stabbing a year or two ago. Lad was stabbed over a biscuit of all things.

About 200 million of them, yes.

You do understand how armour works don't you? It doesn't matter how many handguns, rifles or shotguns you have. They're useless against any armoured vehicle. The US armed forces have about 10k combat aircraft and over quarter of a million combat vehicles!

Ah yes. Hand guns, very effective against abrams!

Problem is the armed forces are much smaller and have to control vast amounts of land - they'll be forced to concentrate forces to make sure they have the upper hand in an engagement and rebelling forces would do everything they could to over-run bases, disrupt supply lines, etc. etc. who are operating on home turf and can hide within the population and so on.

Tanks can be overcome with lower tech especially if they get bogged down in urban fighting where they can be cut off and dealt with - the Houthis have managed it a few times even without RPGs, etc. and its possible for instance to burn a chemical mixture with tires to reduce most aircraft effectiveness even when using thermal sights and the likes. With the numbers game and the size of the country to deal with it would be far less of a one sided war - that isn't to say the civilians can necessarily win but the costs would be very high - I suspect the general level of fitness would be more of an issue than the tech disparity.

A lot of the high end military hardware would not win out the war of attrition - they'd soon run out of cruise missiles using them against soft targets rather than traditional military hard targets like bunkers and airfields, etc.
