School Work Experience.

I went in the army for mine. The people we stayed with were unaware it was our actual work experience, and treated it like we were on a trip. When we told them they laughed. Our school is a joke.

I had to work at HMRC tax department. Would just sit on a chair learning about the department chasing down tax evaders. :o

I spent my 2 weeks working for an outdoor sports store in Bristol, all I did was go climbing in the Avon Gorge with the owner and re arrange window displays, it was brilliant.

My school chose mine for me, and I ended up in a shop that made and sold in soles for shoes. Yet all I did was hoover and make drinks :(

I'm soon coming up to doing school work experience, and I'm looking to go into games design. I'd like to do that sort of job in the future, but don't know of many IT design firms near me. Doe's anyone know of any IT company like that in Newcastle-upon-Tyne?

+ Grateful for any help :)
In regards to getting into the games industry.

I wouldn't worry about it to much as a week or two's work placement with a random it company will mean bugger all if you want to go into the games industry as a career and i don't know of any games related companies that take on people for experience below school leaving age.

A good degree behind you thats applicable to the actual area of the industry you want to work in (although it's not necessary, but it shows you can stick with something), experience and a proven record that you can work in a team will help you so much more. Oh and an awesome portfolio if you're going down the route of anything to do with actual game play design or any 2d/3d art.

What is it you're actually looking at in the games industry? Programming, Game play Design or 2d/3d art as they're all pretty different areas.

www.gamasutra.com and www.gamesindustry.biz might be helpful as they have a few articles on how one might get into the industry.

- Oh yeah, pretty much did a Will off of Inbetweeners. Just didn't get bullied!

FFS - Was meant to be an edit. :(

Haha, same, pretty much. Mine was around a crane manufacturer, working on several aspects of it, like the electrical and mechanical physical work on the shop floor (ala Will - Inbetweeners), as well as the CAD drawings production. It was okay, but I was surprised how poor their electrical dept was. None of them could read even basic electrical drawings, and a monkey could have done a better job at building panels (heck, I do). Still, I suppose money is made by quantity, not quality.

Isnt Newcastle a hub for games development?
Just fire a few letters off to the companies in the area asking for work experience. Im sure they would oblige you.

Is it just me or is school work experience getting easier for kids at school? Last time I did mine I had to do 2 weeks (hard labour in a factory) and these days I'm told it's only a few days?!

Oh well, lucky gits! :p

I did mine in a computer shop.

There were three of us, and we found out on the second day that the PCs were quick enough to run UT in software mode.

So we played that for two weeks against each other, all day, every day. Nobody else there seemed to mind, if we asked to help we were told that nothing needed doing, so we just carried on playing games.

Sounds like heaven!

I remember when UT came out, I was only 8/9 years old and my brother always used to let me play on his PC. He never said no :).

I miss the good old innocent days. :(

I did a week of mine at a local newspaper. Was soul-destroying typing, proofing, editing.. although I did have an entire page for me as a reward.

Other week was at a local universities IT dept. The highlight of the week was changing the CMOS battery on about 100 desktops, and then installing Office (scripted) on them. And Napster.

I got lucky, due to them building a new school and knocking the old one down I got an extra two weeks of summer and no work experience. But then a couple months later I had a 'proper' job in a car accessories shop. Mostly fitting lightbulbs and the occasional stereo/sub/amp install. Shame it was temporary really

My work experience was in a chemist, I actually really enjoyed my time there, even though the junkies would be hanging around the entrance before I arrived for their methadone fix :(

It was my first proper multiplayer gaming experience - back in those days dialup was king and the challenge with a connection was getting it stable, let alone playing games across it!

So to put it simply, it was a brilliant two weeks. I think we helped sell a few PCs as well, as we were demoing them to the customers (some of whom even joined in on a game and went on to spend £1K+ on a PC!).

Did mine in the local barracks where the guys in charge of us, managed to crash a defender into a fense post and have lots of fun doing bugger all :D

No relavence to the job I am doing now at all, so just do something fun :)

It really doesn't matter what you do on work experience, unless you know someone with a cool job willing to take you on it's going to be boring. All the options for our school were anyway, all shopwork basically.
I worked in some ***** shop for a couple of weeks, ended up pinching some fags for my trouble as I had a cash in hand job outside of work experience that I was missing out on from working so late.
