Schools - LOST THE PLOT?

Sorry it's a cop out. Are you putting all people or groups who enforce rules in the same bucket without considering scale, impact or social consent or contract? I'd say that's a bit simplistic.

I made a valid point. Contrasting analogies metaphorically is an effective way of demonstrating absurdity. Promulgation in this way helps drive a point home. Keep up !

My old high school that is, can't say I've heard many positive words said about the place in the last few years so this really doesn't surprise me..

Simple rule, easily kept to, aims to retain a reasonable standard of dress and appearance with a simply drawn line that prevents ambiguity and argument. Don't see the problem frankly, if you don't want your kid punished then don't send him to school in breach of the rules, easy.

Sorry you feel that way. You are making something out of nothing. I made a point, a valid one. I never asked you to critique it, you decided that all by yourself.

So.. does he have to stay in isolation until his hair grows back or what? I have my hair cut after 4+ months. Looks like he may be there for a while.

So they have rules which can be considered broken, but to deal with it like this is moronic. Enforcing rules like these breeds chaos not conformity in my experience.

If you don't agree with the policy after discussing it with them and they don't back down (they're unlikely to I guess), then you've got the choice of moving your child to another school - perhaps the one your wife works at if it's of the same tier. It would be a bit over dramatic if this school is otherwise excellent (their last ofsted was good if that counts for anything to you), but it's an option open to you if you feel let down by them.

It's a shame they've punished your child for it, but if they let it go it sets a precedent for others for something deemed important enough to have written a policy for. Whether that's fair or not is up for debate, but without being on the inside it's hard to judge their stance (not being a Mail reader). For all we know your child could have kicked up a huge fuss when approached about the matter.

That is partly shaved, it says quite clearly that they're not acceptable.

Plus, do a survey with people on the street and ask if that haircut is 'normal' and whether they'd ask the school if the style is acceptable before doing it.

School has to maintain is presentation to the public, students with haircuts like that, dyes etc projects a bad image for a school. Much like you probably wouldn't see a city worker with a haircut like that...

What's next, a thread saying that kickers are equivalent to school shoes?

** There's no need for that **

Suck it up and move on, you should know the rules. Excluding him is the best way to make sure other parents don't make their kids go to school with a silly cut.

Even back in the early 70s were weren't allowed to wear trainers and HAD to wear school uniform to a certain standard which included shirt, tie, jacket, trousers and a school cap.
Break any of those and you would be sent home so nothing has changed.

Exactly, and that's how it should remain. A school can't win with discipline and rules if the parents allow kids to have haircuts as in the OP. Schools have rules, which must be followed and aren't up for negotiation just because another school allows it.

Problem now is too many parents have this 'freedom' mentality, allowing kids to have 'expressing' hair cuts etc etc - no, just follow the damn rules!
