Hi all,

Trying to get some insurance sorted on my scooter, 125cc Runner, unsure where to look to be honest, I have tried e-bike then I didnt know any others :o

Does anyone know of any others? Couldn't see any in the sticky :(

Thanks,

Thanks guys will try some. There seems to be a big diference between the prices of insurance, for example one place quoted me £900 TPFT on my Gilera Runner 125 and somewhere else quoted me £400

Edit: If I have done the CBT and have a provisional Car licence what would I select Provisional Motorbike Licence or Moped Only?

Edit 2: H&R Just quoted £276.30 with £500 excess :)

Look at the differences

NIG £276.30 £500 *excess
Highway Choice £525.05 £350 *excess
Europa £686.70 £250 *excess
Zenith £809.55 £200 *excess
Southern Rock £961.71 £150 *excess

I would probably spend £150 insuring it third party only, lose the theft cover, then spend £100 on a seriously secure chain and lock that will be a much better deterrent for theives. You can just chain it to something substantial. This has saved me hundreds over the years, especially with a £500 excess there on one of those quotes, you'll get about £250 back if it's stolen :(

A Runner is always going to be expensive to insure unfortunately because all the little rudeboy 'ped kids want them.

it is cheaper than my last one (Peugeot Vivacity 100)

What sort of lock do you recommend? Also would it be a good idea to invest in a "Ground Anchor" for my brick shed?

The Excess is the same price I paid for the scooter! :(

TPO quotes:

NIG £281.70
Southern Rock £364.32
Zenith £466.82
Highway Choice £499.68
Norwich Union £889.53

I think it is best to just go with TPFT as I am not saving anything infact its £2 more :p this is only on the first site I have tried TPO with though so we shall see

Dont know if they do scooters but express insurance just gave me a potential amazing quote for a gsxr lol :D do a quote online then they call you up and guarantee to beat your online quote.

Almax Immobiliser III with a squire lock. It's all I'd use on my bikes.

A ground anchor (assuming it's not a cheapo one) will act as something else that will cause thieves aggro, which is always good.

Ok cool, shall have to look into it :)

Or chain it round a lamp post, tree or thick metal fence. I used to chain it round the suspension on my car :D

With the chain go into a bike shop and ask them what's the biggest chain they do. Mine is 1.8m long so it'll go round stuff and weighs about 11kg. I think the links are like 12mm thick and hardened steel but I looked at it, decided I'd struggle to get through it with my angle grinder and thought "that's the one" :D I think it was about £60 or £80 but some of the branded ones are guaranteed and have a more cutting edge padlock design.

Edit:

This one looks pretty serious: http://www.almax-security-chains.co...III-+-Squire-SS65CS-Stronghold-Lock/p-69-123/

However, I reckon you could safely moor a boat with this one: http://www.almax-security-chains.co...eries-IV--Uber-+-Squire-SS65CS-Lock/p-70-129/

19mm links

Looking around at work it seems out the front there are only places where cycles can go and as such the "railing" to chain it to doesn't look that good :(

Are Disk locks worth it also?

What those little things that clip onto the brake disc?

I find they stop chancers yanking the steering to break the steering lock and running off with your bike but little more. Anyone serious will just pick it up and stick it in a van. One place I parked it up they lifted the front of the bike up and tried to wheel it off by the back wheel but luckily I had put the D lock through the back wheel as well. None of that would have happened if I'd just chained it to the fence. I only use the disc lock if I'm just popping into a shop and won't be very long, it's handy for that sort of thing.

I also worry about how easy they are to get off. I reckon one good blow in the right place with a hammer and it'll just shear the pin or break a bit of the disc off. Then they can just wheel your bike off.

The little clip type D-locks are ok for deterring scrotes pushing the scooter away into a secluded area to try and start it, but anyone who has the specific intention to nick it, will do so. The squire D-locks that are sold with the Almax locks above are very good, and won't be hammered off. They also give the flexibility of being used alone as a disk lock, or with the chain.

A couple of things to note - if you use a disk lock, get a fluorescent coil string thingy to remind you it's on. I have caused nearly £600 damage to my bike by riding off with it attached. As well as the financial cost, it was bloody embarassing as it happened in a very busy Lakeside car park :(
Lastly, don't buy any Oxford security products. They are almost without exception useless.

Lastly (again!), don't be fooled into thinking that big chain links=security. It's doesn't work that way. Stick to big brands like Almax, Abus, English Chain.
