Death Star or Mount Doom, it depends on the day.
I was thinking about getting a Scooter to use mainly for work purposes. I was thinking about getting a 125cc. My question is, do you need a full UK driving license to ride a 125cc or do you have to do a bike test. I originally thought that you could just do a 1 day CBT test and that was it but this confused me:

depends on age, 16 year old you're restricted to 50cc and 30mph (I think)

Anything under 125cc & 14bhp can be ridden on a CBT.

Obviously with L plates no motorway.

L plates, no passengers

if you took your car test prior to 2001 I think you can ride a 50cc without a CBT.

125cc – you need to be at least 17. You need a full UK driving licence and a CBT. You can then ride with ‘L’ plates until you obtain your full UK motorcycle licence. You can’t take passengers or drive on motorways until you have your full UK motorcycle licence

50cc is the only one you can ride without a full driving licence.

Right cool, iam 26 and only have a provisional. So I guess that its the CBT for me.

Can anyone recomend a good 125cc Scooter???

I was thinking something like this:

What is it they say? Scooters are like fat girls, a fun ride, but you don't want you mates catching you..

Seriously tho, 125 scooters are a good way to commute short distances, slightly better than a bike in terms of weather protection and offer reasonable performance, albeit not earth shattering.

Because they are designed for commuters they usually have dry storage for your lid.

If you want something that will go fast, you will be looking for a two-stroke (with all the pfaff that goes with them) something like an Italjet Formula 125cc twin should do the trick. To be fair tho, the 4-strokes are a little more reliable and friendly.

The wording is wrong in that link
you can ride a 125cc on a provisional licence and L plates when you are 17 after you have passed a CBT
50cc is the same but at 16
can only ride a 50cc on a car licence if you passed before 2001 :)

Does anyone know what is faster 2 stroke or 4? I would have gone with the bigger number but I have heard otherwise.

2 strokes have faster acceleration, if you have a head wind or going up hill when riding a 2 stroke it will slow down quite a bit, also, fuel consumption is worse on a 2 stroke, as for top speed, theres not much in it these days.

That's not right :)

a cbr125 is geared to do 85mph, an rs125 is geared to do 115, if you're not in the right gear it makes no difference; my old 50 2t went uphill a lot faster in top gear than what my 250 4t does at the minute.

Also, a 4t has faster acceleration. 2t have a higher top speed, because all the power is stuck at the top of the rev range as well as it fires 2x as much as a 4t, but the 4t has all the power spread out more evenly (even if it's 10/15bhp less than the 2t).

Don't bother with a 2 stroke, they're higher insurance, and can't be ridden de-restricted on L plates (if that applies to you.) and you have to carry oil if you ever take it on a long journey with no garages.

Sorry but what a load of b******* .

Firstly no cbr is gonna do 85 and i could beat it on a mobility scooter . A 125 2 stroke would walk all over a 4 stroke 125 . In accleration and top speed .

You dont need to carry 2 stroke oil unless yer doing many hundreds of miles.. Thats why most modern 2 strokes have oil tanks which give a range of about 500 ish miles or more. Plus you can buy it at 90% of garages .

There not more to insure and true you cant ride full power ones but sames goes for 4 strokes assuming you could unrestrict them but there so slow there not restricted in the first place .

Yes more sporty 2 strokes tend to have worse fuel economy and things like Dt's / Nsr's / Rs's do deliver most of there power above 6k rpm .

Persil

They are, Persil is bang on the money, the difference is massive if you have them derestricted, which of course is illegal ;)

Persil, you're pretty much spot on, it's a lot of years since i've ridden a 2 stroke (27 years), in my early biking days i had to use a low gear and rev the b***s out a 2 stroke to get up steep hills and to cope with strong head winds, a 4 stoke would just keep going without much of a fuss in a higher gear and less revs.

Performance wise 2 strokes will always be faster, as for top speed, this would depend on the bike and how it's geared and what restrictions are in place.

I thought if you had a full car licence your CBT no-longer expired after 2 years?

As for the Scooter question? I quite liked their cover of The Logical Song, but their earlier stuff is much better and they look really really chavvy.
One of the points in the above sentence is actually valid in the context of this thread.
