Well. What a weekend.
Saturday practice the weather behaved apart from the odd shower leaving the track a bit damp and greasy. I tried running wets in the morning then slicks in the afternoon but the amount of grip on either tyre wasn't great. I also had my first big moment in the car. Fortunately it happened after the finish line
I got my left foot caught under the clutch pedal after some over steer out the last corner, gunned it for the finish line but I knew without the clutch I wouldn't slow down in time, so I slammed it down the box and put her on the grass where I performed a perfect 720 degree spin and came to a stop
Some minor grass stains and a bent front splitter the only damage.
Come Sunday I was sitting 3rd in class with one final practice run in the morning followed by the 2 official timed runs in the afternoon. The weather looked to be improving and I chose slicks for my first run and posted my fastest time of the weekend so far. After lunch I was really looking forward to my timed run as the track was drying out and the times were getting quicker and quicker. I was in the queue with only 5 cars in front of me, strapped in, slicks on, when a big crash happened with one of the ev0s. This delayed us for only 15 minutes, but the clouds loomed overhead and just as I warmed my "slick" tyres up, the heavens opened to an absolute torrential downpoar. The following drive up the hill was probably the scariest drive ever. As soon as I accelerated round the first corner my honest first reaction was to go for the window wipers as I couldn't see anything out my visor!
After that run the rain was still pouring and I seriously considered going home. I was in 3rd, gotten a timed run, the car was ok and so was I. But I waited it out and although the rain stopped I doubted the power of the Scottish sun to dry the track out enough so I decided to change to the wet tyres and do one final run.
As I pulled up to the start line I noticed everyone else in my class was running slicks and I was the only one running wets. I honestly thought I'd called the tyres wrong so really pushed hard on the run trying to be brave on every corner but keeping it smooth. My time of 53.87 was 3 seconds quicker than my first run, so was glad I had at least went out and bettered my time. It wasn't till a few people were saying well done to me in the paddock and a few marshalls were clapping me on the way down that I decided to go check my time against my class mates.
I had to get my pit crew/sponsor to double check the results because at first I honestly couldn't believe it. But yes indeed I had won my class by over half a second!
Not only this but I received a trophy for 3rd fastest time of day for National B cars!
So, all in all, a wet but very successful weekend! My first ever class win and a proper motorsport trophy! Cheers to DBGViper/David for popping over to see me. Was good to put a name to a face and am glad you got some good shots! Although you missed a terrific triple barrelroll from a westfield at Garden Gate which took out a big chunk of the barrier today, Looked very sore. Anyway, I'm off to upload a video of one my slower practice runs to youtube so will post the link later. You'll realise about half way through the video why I didn't record anything else with it that weekend
