Scottish HillClimb & Sprint 2011 Season-Starring Me!

Just spent the morning and afternoon prepping the car for the weekend's racing aty Kames. Have raised the ride height by 20mm and stiffened up the shocks. The front end should be pretty rigid and the shocks were on setting 5 of 25 to start with and now at their tightest so will see how that adjusts the car as a whole.

On a bragging side note I got the updated drivers leaderboard after the last round. :D

Points are per round. 100 points means you equalled the track record for your class. 85 points means you got within 85% of the track record for that class.

I went along to the Doune Hillclimb yesterday and had a very enjoyable day - even the Scottish weather managed to behave for the afternoon.

The sound of the cars echoing through the trees and hills was unreal; definitely need to go to hillclimb events more often!

I also managed to meet up with Mark briefly in between his practice as he was switching from wets to slicks.

He was kind enough to have a quick chat and let me wander around the tent to take some 'arty' photos.

Also managed to snap him nailing it from the greasy start line.

After the starting line, there is a left handed crest which leads into a long straight, at the end of which is a rather tight right hander.

Bearing in mind the whole hillclimb track has either barriers or walls at either side there is no room for error. Unfortunately one of the competitors cut the corner just too much, resulting in a long drag along the ground.

The marshals tried to move the car by lifting the rear with a trolley jack, which resulted in a very loud crack.
The trolley went straight through the undertray of the car - ouch. Sounded like more fixing the guy could do without!

Good luck for today's official event Mark, hope you manage to place well and I will hopefully see you next weekend at Forrestburn!

Well. What a weekend.

Saturday practice the weather behaved apart from the odd shower leaving the track a bit damp and greasy. I tried running wets in the morning then slicks in the afternoon but the amount of grip on either tyre wasn't great. I also had my first big moment in the car. Fortunately it happened after the finish line :) I got my left foot caught under the clutch pedal after some over steer out the last corner, gunned it for the finish line but I knew without the clutch I wouldn't slow down in time, so I slammed it down the box and put her on the grass where I performed a perfect 720 degree spin and came to a stop :D Some minor grass stains and a bent front splitter the only damage.

Come Sunday I was sitting 3rd in class with one final practice run in the morning followed by the 2 official timed runs in the afternoon. The weather looked to be improving and I chose slicks for my first run and posted my fastest time of the weekend so far. After lunch I was really looking forward to my timed run as the track was drying out and the times were getting quicker and quicker. I was in the queue with only 5 cars in front of me, strapped in, slicks on, when a big crash happened with one of the ev0s. This delayed us for only 15 minutes, but the clouds loomed overhead and just as I warmed my "slick" tyres up, the heavens opened to an absolute torrential downpoar. The following drive up the hill was probably the scariest drive ever. As soon as I accelerated round the first corner my honest first reaction was to go for the window wipers as I couldn't see anything out my visor! :D

After that run the rain was still pouring and I seriously considered going home. I was in 3rd, gotten a timed run, the car was ok and so was I. But I waited it out and although the rain stopped I doubted the power of the Scottish sun to dry the track out enough so I decided to change to the wet tyres and do one final run.

As I pulled up to the start line I noticed everyone else in my class was running slicks and I was the only one running wets. I honestly thought I'd called the tyres wrong so really pushed hard on the run trying to be brave on every corner but keeping it smooth. My time of 53.87 was 3 seconds quicker than my first run, so was glad I had at least went out and bettered my time. It wasn't till a few people were saying well done to me in the paddock and a few marshalls were clapping me on the way down that I decided to go check my time against my class mates.

I had to get my pit crew/sponsor to double check the results because at first I honestly couldn't believe it. But yes indeed I had won my class by over half a second! :D Not only this but I received a trophy for 3rd fastest time of day for National B cars! :D

So, all in all, a wet but very successful weekend! My first ever class win and a proper motorsport trophy! Cheers to DBGViper/David for popping over to see me. Was good to put a name to a face and am glad you got some good shots! Although you missed a terrific triple barrelroll from a westfield at Garden Gate which took out a big chunk of the barrier today, Looked very sore. Anyway, I'm off to upload a video of one my slower practice runs to youtube so will post the link later. You'll realise about half way through the video why I didn't record anything else with it that weekend :)

Just been sent the video of the Westfield rolling at Doune...

Walked away without a scratch on him... now that's what a cage does kiddies!

Hats off to Vipernet and everyone that does hillclimbing... not much margin for error!

Ok, calmed down a bit from the weekend, so will post what happened.

Saturday was wet but went by without a hitch and above my two main rivals. But we lost one single seater to suspension failure and another one running a highly tuned gixxer approx 200bhp shot a rod out the side of the block!

Sunday was looking to be much drier than Saturday and I stuck on the slicks. I improved dramatically in my last practice run and posted a 48.73 which put me well above the pack. However, come my first timed run I understeered wide out the first hairpin and onto the grass losing at least 3 seconds and posting a 51.1 My last run was looking good up until the last hairpin. The car in front of me had gone off at the hairpin and put lots of grass etc onto the track. They should have red flagged my run, cleaned the track then let me restart, but they didn't. I approached the hairpin, hit all the muck and grass, and pretty much followed the line of the car in front. End result I ripped my front wing and I need a new floor. Apparently there were massive sparks from the underside of the car over the line from the floor dragging on the ground!

So, lost my lead in the championship, but have got 4 weeks to prepare the car for the double header Brirtish Championship rounds at Kames.

Few pics from the day and a vid the wife took of me missing first out of the hairpin.

We've had a mid summer break and it's back to Kames for the British Double Header. All the big names from Englandshire are coming up, with my aim to be in the top 20 overall.

We've done a fair bit of work to the car during the break, including oil change, new steering rack, exhaust rewelded and a new floor! I also constructed a diffuser from some aluminium I had lying about. At the moment our car was the only car in the class not running a diffuser. A brand new carbon fibre one from oms was just shy of a grand so I got the angles they used and made my own heath robinson job which you can see below. Hopefully it will make a bit of a difference but we'll find out this weekend!

Also! Got a proper bullet cam and mounted on the roll bar so will have some proper videos to show you all!

loving the ghetto diffuser, how rigid is it?

More rigid than I thought to be honest. There is a bit of downward flex on the top middle edge but the threaded bar keeps it very rigid at the sides. Have thought about adding in a bit of angled aluminium along that top edge to strengthen it, but having looked at loads of the big cars at Kames, I'm considering making a full width one along with a wider undertray from front to back.

As for its effects I definitely felt that back end was more planted at higher speeds. I felt a lot more confident going through the high speed esses but I did find that understeer had increased a fair bit - too much downforce on the back lifting up the front? Could dial it out with less rear wing... but I'm getting ahead of myself, I'm no aeroman :)

Rounds 8 & 9 - British Sprint @ Kames

Getting very familar with Kames now and starting to understand the track a bit more. Was good to be recognised in the paddock with the rest of the Scottish contigent, and my father was granted ministerial leave to compete on both days. :)

On the Saturday the track ran anti-clockwise (not my father's favourite) and we were treated to glorious weather all day. Playskool motorsport were also up from England and were kind enough to deliver my new racesuit and another helmet for my father so we didn't have to share the same sweaty helmet for each run :)

Anyway, my father and I both improved over the day and I ended up with a new personal best by just under 2 seconds, and I beat my father by just over 8 seconds. I took fifth in class but was still about 3-4 seconds from the fastest in class so there is still room for improvement.

On Sunday we changed to the standard clockwise direction but the rain ruined our practice runs and the track remained damp for the timed runs. I still got within half a second of my personal best so I know that given the conditions I can improve for sure.

Overall out of 70 I placed 20th with my father back in 32nd. So I met my target for the weekend and the car came back intact with no damage

As I said previously we got a new bullet camera. Unfortuately it seems the vibrations got the better of it and it was cutting on and off and the microphone seems to be bust. Not to mention the main control button came off halfway through the run! Have combined together the only two usable clips and the result is below:
